Wide Open Play of Reavers
Will Be More So in'1936
Says Grid Mentor 18
Lettermen Will Return
By JAMES S. NUTTElt
(Associated Press stall Writer.)
CORVAUJS, Ore.. Dec 11. (P
Oregon State college's wide-open de
fense which thrilled spectators end
chilled opponent this season, will be
still dizzier In 1938 and probably
tven more effective.
This mi the word today of Head
Conch Von 8tlner, who boldly said
hi teem "should be even better" next
year. But It will be no bed of roses
for the Beavers, he believes, for most
opponents will be stronger.
Keeps 18 Letlermen.
While 10 lettermen graduate, only
three were regulars. Returning will
be 18 lettermen nearly two full
teams. This year's starting backfleld
returns Intact. Seven of the return
ing lettermen are backs and 11 line
men. Coach Btlner said next year's line
should be stronger, on the whole, de
spite the Ices of JoMln and Schultz,
regular ends, and Moclurg, resrular
guard. Needless to say. tne oaeiuieia
will be stronger. Sophomores carried
nearly all the backfleld burden this
season, and the starting tackles were
sophomores.
The Beaver reserves should be about
the same, he said. However, observ
ers believe that If this year's talented
rooks come through as expected, the
reserves will be stronger, for there
will be more experienced Juniors and
seniors.
Orny Remaining.
Joe Grey, probably the most out
standing all-round sophomore half
back In the Coast conference this sea
son, should attain new heights. His
passing arm was the magic wand of
the Beavers' aerial circus, and he
scintillated at ball carrying. Seldom
did he fall to twist loose at least
once a game for a kick return of 50
yards or more. His change of pace
and ability to remain on his feet
carried him farther thnn many speed
ier backs.
He tied with Cheshire of U. C. L. A.
for conference scoring honors at 48
points. (Chesshlre has one more
chance Saturday against St. Mary's.)
To his other accomplishments Gray
added signal calling late this season,
and showed capable generalship.
If Kolberg. sophomore fullback, and
the other fullback candidates con
tinue to Improve, they will provide
the line-smashing threat needed to
make Gray more effective on off
tackle and end runs.
Plenty of Wlnnmen.
Anticipating the loss of both regu-
lar snds. the Oregon State coaches
paid particular attention to devel
oping reserves and freshmen. There
will be plenty of rangy, pass-catching
wlngmen on hand next fall.
Besides Gray and Kolberg. Swnnson
and Duncan are returning backfleld
regulars. The key linemen lor next
year are Darning, outstanding center;
Strack. guard, and Miller and Plsher.
tackles.
This was the first season of wide
open football for the Beavers, and
they were handicapped by not having
s strong enough power attack to sup
plement It. Nevertheless, the open
football worked much ol the time and
produced thrills aplenty.
"Weil go rlfiht on next se-'.ijn.
playing the same open. char..-c-taklng
football we did this, only still more
so now that the players have the
Idea." Coach Btlner promised spec
tators and warned opponents.
