Speaking Sunday evening at the
Church of the Nazarene. on Che liter
ary and spiritual Influence of the
Bible, Fred M. Weatherford. pastor
evangelist, said In part;
"We are today commemorating the
four hundredth anniversary of the
printed Bible. It is phenomenal, but
.rot surprising to note the wld range
of Infltience which the Bible has made
uvon clvuizatoln.
"h Bible la the literary classic, of
he world. It Is outstanding to note
the words of the poet Pope, in re
.'erring to tha Bible; "'Nowhere as
in the Scriptures have blended the
roble and the pure, the dignified and
the graceful, n. simplicity of Un
guae.
"Ooethe, the great oerman writer,
characterizes tha Book of Ruth as
The loveliest epic and Idol of all
literature.'
"All that Is truest and beac in the
world of education has been woven
into it from this reat epic gem of
all literature. It Is written In the
purest and noblest English, abound
ing In the moat exquisite styl of all
literary form. A comparison Is inter
esting at thla point; for Instance,
Tennyson's 'In Memor'.am' was 83 per
cent pure English words: Chaucer's
'Prologue' 88 per cent, Spencer's
'Fatrle Queen' 8fl per cent, while in
Sh&kespear s drama, there Is a per
centsge of 85, and In Milton's 'Para
dise Lost' 81 per cent; but the King
ernes version of the Bible has the
high rating of 97 per cent pure Eng
lish words. No greater tribute could
be given the Bible, as the highest per
feet ion of the English language.
"Let us turn to some of the beacon
lights of thla masterful Book of Books.
For Instance the drama of Job, with
Us noble philosophy and striking
poetry, as well as the moat sublime
joul epic of the ages; the Book of
Psalms with Its charming meditations
and dramatic lyrics; tha BooX of Pro
verbs with Its unexcelled collection
of moral prudential maxims; the
prophesies of Isaiah, or Daniel and
of Joel, with their prophetlfl ranee !
and heart uplifting rhapsodies eaca
moving like the shifting gllmmtr and
changing scenes of highly wrought
drama.
"Turning to the Levi t leal V.w, from
this incomparable literary volume, we
find the most profound and condu
cive treatise on law available. It
forms the basis of the Justinian and
Napoleonic codes, and may I add, of
ill present day Jurisprudence.
"Then will you turn with me to the
immortals letters of Paul, noble In
their molding of impeachable logic
and Impassioned emotion, they stand
as the Immutable epitome of the In
finite for redemption and ethical
conduct.
Let me say In concluding, that the
Bible Is the only book offering spir
itual rehabilitation to man from hi
lost heritage. It is a display o: God's
majestic handiwork and His explan
ation of human disfigurement with
His entreating sacrificial offer to sal
vage the destiny of the human race."
There was one profession of f.ilth
:n response to the pastor's appeal
during the day.
