FEEDING, CLOTHING
OP NAVAL RECRUIT
One of the most interesting, as
well as the most necessary of the
activities of a U. S. naval training
station is that which has to do with
the clothing and subsisting of re
cruits and other personnel received
for training. While various service
schools are maintained there for ad
vanced training of men who have
been at sea with the fleet, recruit
training constitutes the station's pri
mary mission: and the proper feed
ing and clothing of the recruits.
The supply officer of the station
Issues to each man an outfit of
clothing, which Is given each recruit
upon entering the service. This out-
tit consists of everything from under
wear on out to an overcoat, hats,
shoes and bedding.
A stock of approximately 6100.000
worth of clothing Is kept at the train
ing station to meet clothing needs of
the men.
Having been outfitted, the recruit
is Interested In what he will receive
to take the place of those good meals
"mother used to make." Tills feature
of his well being Is administered by
the comlssary department of the sta
tion. As recruits are growing boys, a
well-balanced nutritious and ade
quate ration Is the most important
consideration in their development.
The navy department buys only the
best food products the market affords
and maintains cooking and baking
schools to insure the most efficient
handling of these products.
The fact that recruits gain from
five to ten pounds during 12 weeks
of training, and that the "sick ad
mission rate" for these men Is excep
tionally low, would Indicate that their
bodily needs are matters of the most
careful consideration by the navy.

Lloyd Warner's ear was damned
when It upaot at the curve at the
Powells Creek bridge recently. Neither
Lloyd nor Willard Sargent, who was
riding with him, waa hurt and they
were able to drive the oar home af
ter mending 4 flat tlrea. The Warner
car was on the main highway and a
truck from the llmo quarry was cross
ing the bridge when the two drivers
saw each other but too late to avoid
the collision. Warner drove his car
as far up the steep side aa possible
when It upset.
