Eord breaking cold gripped Inte
rior Alruka todmy.
Port Yukon, Alaska, on the upper
Yukon, reported 11 below zero today,
lowest December reading In the re
corded history of the el-year-old
trading post.
Fairbanks' B9 degrees below zero
last night equalled Its previous De
cember record of 1813.
Circle City reported 60 below; Big
Delta, 88 below, and Eagle and Daw
ton, 63 below last night.
All readings were from official gov
ernment thermometers.
At Nome, on the Bering seacoast,
the mercury was comparatively high,
registering eero. This fact, coupled
with the abnormally low reading In
land, Indicated there that the In
tense cold wave was coming straight
from the north pole.
Disturbances off coast and mild
weather at Barrow, on the Arctic rim.
Indicated the cold wave may break In
a day or two.

held yesterday afternoon at the court
house, her topic being certain phases
of music. During the session Christ
mas are Ideas and plana for a Christ

cussed. The next meeting was announced
for the flrat Saturday In January, at
which time Mlsa Ida O'Brien of the
Southern Oregon Normal school will
present a study of Intermediate read
ing problems.

MINES IN COUNTY
SALEM, Ore., Dec. 7. (AP) The
state game commission at Portland
filed application with the state engi
neer for a permit to appropriate 10
second feet of water from Rock creek,
tributary of the North Umpqua river,
for fish propagation In Douglas
county.
Other applications Included:
Olenn M. Young. Jacksonville, for
two second feet from Steve Oster
creek, for placer mining in Jackson
county.
Martin J. Love, Jacksonville, for
one second foot from a. spring, tribu
tary of the Applegate river, for do
mestic purposes in Josephine county.
W. P. Wright. Rogue River, for one
second foot from Tom East creek and
Black canyon for milling purposes in
Josephine county.
IN FOG BLANKET
LONDON, Dec. 7. (AP) The en
tire British Isles, except for a small
part of Wales, was blanketed today
by the first general heavy fog of
winter.
Air service was cancelled, forcing
foreign secretary Sir Samuel Hoare
to arrange to go by boat and train
to Paris Instead of by plane for his
conference with Premier Lval.

SALEM. Dec. 7. (AP) W. J.
Laird, SO, was being held by the
sheriff's office here pending the ar
rival of officers from Walla Walla,
who will return him to that city as
soon as extradition papers are Issued.

will reopen as soon as Chief of Police

Charles McCullough, ex-inmate of
the prison and star state witness
against Boggle, was grilled by defense
counsel to try to establish a bitter
enmity against Boggle. McCullough,
paroled, testified yesterday that Bog
gle told him he had beaten the aged
Spokane man to death.
The defense accused McCullough of
"framing" the story agalnnst Boggle
with other Inmates who bore a grudge
against him.

TO ATTEND MEET
About 24 members of the Medford
aerie of the Fraternal Order of Eagles
and the auxiliary planned yesterday
to attend the southern district con
vention In Klamath Palls this after
noon. The drill team, captained by Jack
Hueston, will stage an exhibition. The
auxiliary delegation will be headed by
Mrs. George Coats, state president.

Portland to attend a Nash factory
meeting Monday. They will return
