ON GAL OF GAS
The tHi of the Chrysler -utomette
altant overdrive was thoroughly dem
onatrated thin writ when new 1B3S
Chrysler 8 sedan equipped with a nu
meter. averaged aa miles to a Rillon
ol pi it i speed of 4S miles per hour,
according to H. P. lAne of the Laqae
Motor Co., local Chrysler and Plym
outh dealer.
Mr. Lange says. "The suocess of the
Chrysler automatic overdrive In the
Airflow line made it Inevitable that
Chrysler would eventually extend this
feature to the lower-priced cars In
the line.
"In effect. It Is a fourth speed that
automatically comes Into operation
when the car attains a predetermined
peed of from 35 to 40 miles an hour,
and throws the car Into a lower gear
itto. The reduction In engine revolu
tions la as much as 30 percent to sus
tain a given ear speed. The saving In
"fuel, oil and engine wear la obvious.
In addition to the economy feature,
the .overdrive permits a quality of
performance that cannot be ap
proached without It. There la a
smoothness due to the decreased en
gine revolutions that makes tha ride
seem akin to flying. With the over
drive In operation It requires only as
many engine revolutions to sustain
a speed of 65 miles an hour a are
required for a speed of 45 miles an
hour In conventional drive.
"Chrysler In addition to an Im
proved performance of the 193S line,
has placed a definite accent on lux
ury. By luxury I do not mean
gadgets, extravagances or ostentation.
I mean the luxuries of superior per
formance, the luxury of longer, room
ier, more sleek exteriors, the luxury
of fine Interior trim and equipment.
"I mention this as a single, obvious
Instance, but throughout all Ohrys
lers which long ego were designed to
give more than the bare necessities
of transportation, you will find the
same tendency to put the accent on
luxury. ,
"Chrysler performance, always the
pace-setter, has been greatly Improv
ed by the addition of numerous ex
clusive engineering features. Our low-er-prlced
models, through these bet
terments., now give a quality of ride
that the public has long believed
could be had only In very large and
heavy cars. Handling ease has been
Increased, a feature that will appeal
particularly to women drivers. A new
type of body and frame construction
Increases safety.
"Prom the re-styled, more grace
fully curved new radiator grille, back
to the new bullt-ln rear trunk, stan
dard on all sedan models, blending
smoothly Into the rear panel, the
blowing lines of the new Chrysler Six
nd Deluxe Eight give the Impres
sion of reduced height end greater
length. And the overall height Is low
er, and the bumper to bumper length
slightly longer. Yet the Interiors of
the touring sedsn bodies have been
Increased four Inches In elbow room,
while the height from floor to cell
ing snd the head room remain un
changed. A new footrest is skillfully
rewd Into the beck of the front
seat.
"t the drivers' compartment,
full width cushion, with divided full
seat back, either section of which
tllta forward, replaces the bucket
. seats of the two-door sedan or tour
ing brougham. A new arrangement of
x- larae. easily read dials of the
speedometer and other Instruments
adds to the attractive appearance of
th. nunel. windshields sre of the V-
tvpe. and sedan rear windows are di
vided."

DEMAND HITS

PORTLAND, Not. 30. ( AP) De
creasing demand for eggs consider
ing the season appeared more to
blame for the present weaknew in
the trade than the actual increase
In fresh supply.
There was no change In butter or
butterfat quotations. Consumption of
butter continued to decrease with
advancing prices. Make also showed
a decrease.
Demand for chickens showed a
mixed tone. In some quarters there
was decided weakness suggested as
a result of the carryover but In
other quarters bids were being
maintained.

Jackie Merkle, 7-year old New Jer
sey boy credited by some with hav
ing psychic powers, predicted this
score for today's football game at

Earlier this week Jackie gave cor
rectly municipal budget figures at
city hall after they were written on
a paper In another room. Other
such feats have Impressed many persons.
WASHINGTON, Not. SO. (API-
Senator MeNsry of Oregon. Republi
can leader, predicted today that at
the aesalon of congress beginning In
January a soldiers bonus bill wilt be
enacted despite a presidential veto.
MrNary, who helped the senate to
sustain last May President Roose
velt's disapproval of the Patman plan
to pay the $2,000,000,000 Immediately
with new currency, told questioners:
"A bonus bill will pasa this ses
sion over a presidential veto. In my
opinion."
He did not say what kind of bill,
but there have been other forecasts
that any non-lnflatlon bill would
have the better chance.
As McNary made the statement,
the Veterans of Foreign Ware re
quested their stata and district chair
men to establish contact with sen- ,
atora and representatives to combat
what they termed a "crafty cam
paign" to raise a "smoke screen" In .
opposition to the bonus.
The V. P. W.. said "Selfish bust j
nesa Interests and Individuals In the j
administration and congress" seek to .
convey the Idea that bonus payment j
means Increased taxation.
"The so-called bonus must not be
Jockeyed Into any such controversial
position," the V. P. W. said.
"With approximately $11,000,000.-
000 In gold and silver tn reserve In
the treasury and an unexpended bal
ance of about $4,000,000,000, there ;
Is no reason why the payment of
this debt to the veterans should be
linked with Increased taxes."
Secretary Morgenthau recently said i
that aa "far as I know" the White '
House remains unchanged In its op
position to Immediate payment of i
the bonus. I
Some observers here, studying a i
certain passage In President Room- j
ve)t!s speech at Atlanta yesterday,
wondered whether the chief execu-'
tlve might not be looking ahead to
possible enactment of the bonus,
even over a presidential veto.
Mr Roosevelt's failure to cite the
$2,000,000,000 stabilisation fund as s
government asset aroused specxilatlon
as to whether he might be earmark
ing this money for some specific
purpose such as eventual bonus
payment.
