the hardy Islanders gather fish
ovsters. crabs, and clama from the
surrounding waters.

are unknown and there in only one

handcarts, and a few bicycles are

Family Vnmw l imited
Tn one of the few lorge burying
plots on the Island only three fam
ily tinmen are found among three
or four down tomrMtonps. It. haa
long been the custom to affix num
bers after surnames, so that var
ious branches of the same family
can be distinguished. Names found
on Tangier recall thrwe of the peo
ple on the Cornwall coast, from
whom the natives of the Virginia
island are directly descended.

which employ many of the Inhabi
tants. The captain of the mail boat. .
the postmaster, the minister, and
an occasional visitor are the only
persons on the island who do not :

"Neat, white-picketed cottages are 1
bordered by tiny vegetable gardens 1
in which the Island's 'truck' is
raised. A smsll dairy provides nec- i
easary milk products and the bay j
yields the main courses on the i
Wanders' dinner tables. Imported j
fruits, meats, and vegetables dls- j
played In the grocery stores are re- i
garded more aa curiosities than as j
articles of food. I
'Sunday brings a stop to all acttv-
ltlea on Tangier. Every Islander is
member of the church and all
either attend services or remain In
doors in order not to disturb the
Sabbath peace. Such religious zeal
on the part of the Islanders dates
from the beginning of the loth
century, when Tangier became a
noted rel Igious center. In 1800 the
first of the Island's famous mid
summer camp meetings was held
the beach. In succeeding years
these meetings have attracted vis
itors from hundreds of miles around
and they are stilt annual events.
Of special Interest to the visi
tor on Tangier are the church, and
Tangier lighthouse, built In 189U
the southern tip of the Island
Tangier Light, together with Watu
Island lighthouse, guard the south
era entrance to Tangier sound."
