ADDIS ABABA. Nov. 22.--1 have
jiist completed a 700-mile flight over
the southern front, penetrating two
thirds of the way Into Ogaden prov
ince right to the battle lines and
south to Daggah Bur.
During the outgoing and return
flights, my plane paralleled Emperor
Halle Selassie's giant, single -motored
ship for parts of the Journey, while
he was making his first visit to the
war zone.
Ras'Nasthu, Ethiopian commander,
ln-chirf on the southern front, and
his aide, Wehib Pasha, former general
of the Turkish imperial army and
Dardanelles hero, warned me of the
danger of being shot down by Ital
ians. I flew over Gorrahei, which the
Italians occupy, flying sufficiently
high to outdistance Italian anti-aircraft
fire.

The population of Daggah Bur,
mistaking my plane for an Italian
craft, fled the city.
"Your flight Is a highly hazardous
one," said Bas Naslbu. "because the
unlettered natives know only Italian j
planes. They will undoubtedly mis- j
take your machine for an enemy piano j
and may attempt to shoot you down. 1
"I advise you to fly at the maxi
mum speed of 200 ml!s sn hour,
maintaining the utmost height In or
der to avoid anti-aircraft guns and
rifle fire."
Within a half hour I was flying ,
over Daggah Bur. where Dr. Robert
W. Hockman has the only American
field hospital In Ethiopia.
The stars and stripes fly proudly
from Dr. Hockman's tents, warning
the Italians that they must refrain
from bombing this remote refuge.
Impossible Tft Land
Owing to the lack of an airfield
nd the presence of anti-aircraft
equipment, it was Impossible to land,
but I could plainly discern stretcher
carriers carrying wounded to Doctor
Hockman's hospital, which Is now the
southermost outpost of the Ethiopian
army.
Plying thence toward Gorrahei. I
cotild discern no large bodies of either 1
Ethiopian or Italian troops. This ap
parently proved most of the Italian
activities thus far have been confined
to air bombing and tank attacks.
Indeed, 90 per cent of the wounded

Inhospitable Land
The whole vast Ogadcn war zone
Is a barren, desolate forbidding waste
with only scattering human habita
tions. For thousands of square miles, the
Inhospitable and unproductive Af
rican plain Is covered with cactus,
brush and brambtes reminding one of
the wildest parts of the western
United States.
Everywhere I landed in the eight
hour flight through the war zone. I
found unbounded enthusiasm for the
emperor.
"Now that we have seen him en the
actual battlerront, we know he will
be as great In war as in peace and we
are sure he will lead us to victory
like Menelck." was one expression.
The name of Halle Selassie was on
everyone's lips. It was clear that the
emperor's visit stimulated the morale
of his troops.

One hardy warrior said:
"We are tired of the silly air bomb
ings by Italians, which are not a real
man s way of fighting.' We want to
fight the Italians hand-to-hand a
