bulletin from the Washington, D.
C headquarters of the National
Geographic society.
Fierce Men, Fiercer Nature
"A country where men are fierce
and nature If anything, is fiercer
still, the Danakil covers an area
roughly the same aa that of Kan
sas, It Interposes & feared and commonly-avoided
barrier 400 miles
long and ISO miles wide along the
boundaries that separate Ethiopia
from southern Eritrea and much of
French Somallland.
"Not nil of the Danakil Is a
waste, however. In parts of It there
are forests, graasy plains, large
herds of game and some agricul
ture. Near Its eastern border the
Awash, one of Ethiopia's 'disappear
ing rivers' loses Itself In the ground
on Its way toward the aea, but be
fore vanishing It waters a large
area of the southern Danakil.
"In the north Is the Danakil
Depression, the Danakil at It worst,
100 miles of desert sunk 300 to 400
ffet below sea level , deeper below
the aea than California's Death val
ley . and many degrees hotter.

"The Danakil people who eke out
an existence In this Inhospitable
country are primitive men In almost
every sense of the word. Some of
them, explorers have said, live more
like animals than men, sleeping on
the bare ground and subsisting on
nothing but raw meat and milk
from their thirsty, half - atarved
flocks.
"Their method of making fire by
rubbing stinks Is more primitive
than that used by the Egyptians
4.000 years ago. Many tribes kill all
strangers on sight, are constantly
attacking and plundering each other,
and have a marked hatred for all
wlittr men.
' Many a Danakil warrior wears
feather tn his hatr as a proud
sign that it Is leas than a year since
he has killed a man. In some tribes
a man may not marry until he has
taken at least one human life.

"Though the Danaklls are dark
of skin, explorers believe they have
llttls or no negro blood but are a,
mixture of Egyptlsn and Arab
strains. The typical Danakil Is clear
cut of feature but almost painfully

not infrequently kills whole tribes
when lack of wnter wipes out their

cently at lenst, never had seen a
European. The rulers of Ethiopia
never have had more than nominal
control over them. Along the bor
ders of French Somallland an arm
ed truce exists between Danaklls
and French garrisons. Moat of the
Danaklls are Mohammedans,

of salt and potanh. chalk beds,
lava fields, and In the north sev
ers! active volcanoes. Crocodiles and
hippopotami thrive in the waters
of the Awah in the south. There
also are herds of wbra. antelope
and wild boar, and farther north

precarious living around the far
scattered water holes.

low mountains, deerte, boulder-
strewn barrens, basalt cliffs and
canyons. Available maps show only
'occasional waier' scattered througn
the region.
"This area roughly marks the
center of the Danakil. To the nortn
it Is even more forbidding, with
volcanoes active or quiescent sur
rounded by rough lava flows, a
chain of huge salt lakea along the
western edge of the Danakil De
pression, and many of the water
holes so mineralized as to make
the water almost unfit to drink.
"Even in the shsde temperatures
have been registered from 140 to
156 degrcs Fahrenheit, so mucn
greater than the normal tempera
ture of the human body that trav
elers cool their hands by placing
them under their armpits.
"In the southern Danakil. jus;
north of the railroad from Djibouti
to Addis Ababa, the country la more
Inviting. High mountains rise from
6.000 to 8,000 feet. A belt of forest
extends along the course of the
Awash river and game U plentiful.
There are hot springs, swamps and
many water holes, with grassy plains
and thorn bush scattered here and
there.
' "Farther north this country
merges into treeless plains, some
granny and others barren. Plains
and hills alternate with open scat
tered bush. This type of country
continues to the southern border
of the AiiMa Sulanate, due west of
French Somallland. Where the
Awash river nears the, border there,
is enough water for cultivation or
crops and grazing for abundant
game end herds of cattle and cam
els. "Most of the Danakil people are
nomads, except those along the
coast of the Red Sea In Eritrea who
are fishermen. They live largely on
their herds of sheep and goats,
with some caravan traffic, and in
the past at least, an occasional
slave raid or plundering expedition
"Rifles are comparatively few in
the Inner Danakil. A lance ana

worth of property In the first ten
months of this year.
The commission made 154 sales
of state-owned property to get It
off the tax-free list. Last year the
whole twelve months aaw only 63

In the commission's revenues, saio

date this year the Increase has
slowed to about 910.000 since Jan
uary. Since the commission's estab

IN NORTHERN WILDS
KASKESIO, Sask. (UP) Appear
ance of a weird, hooded figure which
stalks and attacks settlers during the
night has aroused fears among In
dians and superstitious whites that a
"Wectlgo," mythical Indian devil,
again Is roaming this northern coun
try. The legeudary evil spirit Is de
scribed as a ghost-like figure of a
man, wearliig a sack over the head
with slits cut out for eyes.
Several settlers and Indians have
reported to police that the figure had
sneaked near their lonely homes and
cemps In the north area around the
National park and frightened them
with weird antics.
One Indian said the figure stalked
out of a bush to bla camp, seized a
kettle of boiling water and threw It
at him. scalding his back.
Indians In the district swesr the
figure Is a "Weetlgo." an erll spirit
with no eyea and no mouth. White
settlers say it Is a "crazy Indian."
The "spirit" disappeared after
wandering around for several weeks,
but the Indiana predict It will return.
