SPLIT ON PLAN 10
(Continued rrom Page One.)
Independence of aetlon and expreiwcd
the fear that the same Independence
might be demonstrated again.
The cessation of the autonomy ac

dor AKlra Arlyoshl of Japan to Gen
eralissimo Chiang Kai-Shek, the Chi
nese leader. In Nanking Wednesday.
It was reported that Ambassador
Arlyoshl assured General Chiany that
the Tokyo government was not con
templating military action In north
China and was not suggesting that
north China secede from the national
government.
In return, Genera: cr.lsng was said
to have assured the ambassador that
the national government Intended to
lmtltute a new administration In
north China.
Still, there were Indications that
aome measure of autonomy would be
achieved at some future time In
north China under arrangements
screed upon between Nanking and
Tokyo.
The British foreign office said that
It had exchanged views with t he
United States regarding the situation
In north China and that It was "more
hopeful."
POLIO DIAGNOSIS
PLACED
After careful collaboration with
other doctors of the city, County
Health Doctor A. N. Johnnon today
announced that at lenso two of the
caee reported in tho county m In
fantile parnlynis were very probably
not that diKeniw at nil. At first them
were symptoms In some ways simllnr
to pnralyMs but time has convlncod
the physicians that the dlacaxe Is a
much milder one, and will not have
such serloua consequence.
At a meeting of the Jackson County
MedlcaJ association held at the Hotel
Medford last night, the concensus
among the physicians was that there
never had been a paralysis epidemic
here, and that the chances there
would be were vastly remote. The few
Isolated cases, the doctors agreed,
would very probably be the last, and
there Is no bs&ls for any sort of panic
In the city or county, they averred.
The medical association meeting
waa given by Dr. Robert W. Stearns
as host. Papers pertaining to polio
mcylltls were delivered by Dr. Wm.
P. Holt (DlaaaoalK), Dr. B. C. Wilson

OF LAKE SCARES
ELK RAPIDS. Mich. (UP) The
red man's superstition regarding the
dusty-red waters of Bass lake near
here still lives.
The Indians of this section who act
as guides for fishing parties will not
venture near the shores of this body
of water. When It Is mentioned they
hang their head and murmur:
"Matchl Manltou' (Evil Devil's)
home; me no fish on Bass lake."
Even Jake Bogod, a native fishing
guide, despite his contact with the
whites and their Ideas, will not go
near the place. When asked to go he
will murmur the phrase.
Questioned further, he will relate
to you how many years ago two In
dians set out across the lake In a
canoe, disappeared In a fog and were
never seen after that. At that time
their comrades thought the red men
had gone to the "Happy Hunting
Grounds"; but 40 years ago when the
waters of the lake turned dusty-red,
they changed their first .conclusion
and have ever since maintained that
tho devil of the deep Inhabits the
lake and lives on the bodies of red
men. Even when told the truth, that the
water Is dusty-red because an Iron
foundry compuny once dumped the
overflow from the mills Into the lake.
they will not believe It.

NEW SUII 'STYLE
LCfNDON (UP) Once again the
Prince of Wa les has In trod uced
new style In tailoring, and Savlle

To the casual eye there may not
appear to be anything unusual about
the prince's latest double-breasted

an Innovation.
Tf the prince's example Is fol

perfectly straight take the place of
the usual heel length hang' which

BANANAS ARE TESTED
BY ELECTRIC GADGET
CAMBRIDOE, Mass. (UP) Tobe
Deutchmann can test all the bananas
he wants without getting sick.
One of the larger banana compa
nies wanted a scientific Instrument
that would test the bananas and tell
the exact amount of sugar In each
stalk at any given point in their de-,
velopment.
Deutschmann Invented . a gadget i
about the size of an average alarm
clock, with two slender prongs which 1
arc pressed Into the fruit or the
stalk. In the tester Is a small dry
battery and the amount of current
passing through the banana from
one prong to the other registers on a
dial. The current flows more freely
as the sugar content of the fruit
Increases, so It Is possible to tell by
a glance at the Indicator just what
stage of ripeness the banana has
reached.
Previously one had to taste the ba
nana to reveal Its ripeness.

LONDON (UP) The noise prob
lem of London's underground trains
Is likely to be solved shortly.
Experiments with a special new
type of 80-foot rails, now being par
ried out on the Morden-Edgware
line near Leicester square, are re
sulting In the elimination of the
roar which makes conversation Im
possible as the trains travel through
the tunnels.
"The secret Is in welding long
rails," explained an official of the
London Transport Works depart
ment. "We1 have used 90-foot rails
unwelded in suburban districts, but
this Is the first time we have tried
them in the tunnels."
When the experiments are finally
proven successful the Change-over to
the long rails, costing several mil
lion pounds, will be begun.
