Francisco Sunday, to see the "Lit
tle Big Oame" between St, Mary's
and Santa Clara. Having once funk
ed out of Santa Clnra we have a
warm spot for that school and want
ed to see them win, but still think
they were lucky to get away with a
10-0 loss against St. Mary'. Despite
the opinion that. San Francisco
papers hold that Santa Clara haa a
great" backfleld. we feel that the
Medford high achcol backfleld would
hr.ve done better, That was the ball
game. Aside from completing one
flO-yard pass. Santa Clara flashed no
offensive threats whatever.
St. Mary's did. however. They have
one halfback named Sill, almost un
heard of before Sunday's game, who
la one of the hardest and trickiest
runners we've seen In sges. Ho ac
counted for about 3fi of tho 50 yards
that scored on the last march ot
the game.
Since the game we've advanced
the opinion, somewhat shyly at first,
that high school football Is more
fun to watch than Is college ball.
And surprisingly enough, there are
many others who agree with this
sentiment, always providing that It
Is a good high school football game.
Here's why we think that. Tn high
school tho . players aren't afraid to
try anything that nilht work. They
are perfectly willing to gamble. And
If they get a chance to throw a
lateral pas, they throw It. and the
game goes on. They try trick plays,
and their maneuvers are always ex
elttng. They don't kick on third
down. And they are Just as apt to
paw In their own territory as not.
We're not advancing the theory
that such tactics would win rollrge
football games. But from a spec
tator's point, of view, we maintain
that the high school variety Is the
most entertaining. One who concur
tn that opinion Is Rufs Aohlson.

GOLD HILL PIE
Had the gentleman who coined the
phrase, 'There's nothing new under
the sun," been present at the Armory
wrestling matches last night, hi con
victions on the subject would have
undergone a terrific Jolt. After wan
dering the southland of Mexico for
several months. Pete Belcastro re
turned to the local wars and pre
sented a brand new hold to take Oold
Hill's Mad Marine, Bob Ken n as ton.
two out of three falls.
Kennaston took the first fall after
throwing Belcastro over his head with
a leg cradle four times, and .pinning
him with abody press. It was during
this fall that the middle rope on the
arena collapsed when the two grap
piers hit It together In a melee. Ap
parently dazed, Belcastro wobbled out
.of his corner feigning injury, and
then attempted a drop-kick against
the Gold Hill pride, but that young
man obviously had been told what to
expect and he promptly took to the
canvas.
Three minutes after the start of
the second fall the Italian flash tied
the marine up In a whip wrlstlock
and whammed him to the sailcloth in
three terrific wallops, a though beat
ing a rug. and then pinned him with
a body press.
It was In the third frame that Bel
castro really showed hi art. He tossed
the marlne'about easily, absorbing all
that Kennaston could give him. and
then locking him In a hold never be
fore seen here. It might roughly be
described as a toe crab, or a toe
deathlock, with Pete on his feet, Ken
naston flat on hi back, and with the
marine's feet turned inward, locked
solidly by Belcastro's pedal extremi
ties. After the match Belcastro ad
mitted that the hold was one of his
own devising, designed as a counter
IrrltAtnt to Kennaston's well known
reverse body crab.
"Call It whatever you like." Belcas
tro said, admitting that it hasn't yet
been given a name.
All evening Kennaston tried hard to
apply his famous punishing hold, but
Pete was ready for It. and either
flipped up Into, a head scissors, or.
grabbing the marine by the scruff of
the neck, tossed him over his head 1
onto the mat. On one occasion he
heaved the befuddled Kennaston clear
over the ropes with his feet, and then
pushed him off the edge of the mat
for good measure.
The middle bout of the three-ply
card saw Ies Wolfe of Texas emerge
the winner over Toots Kstes In an
exciting encounter. Estes took the
first fall when he clamped a flying
log scissors on Wolfe's head as Wolfe
was trying to throw him with a fly
ing marc. The two fell to the can
vas with E.stes on top. he taking the
fall with a body press.
The second round went to Wolfe
when he got out of a threatened
deathlock and sewed Estes up in a
rolling scissors, battering the Hawa
iian champ badly before taking the
fall with a reverse leg lock. Using
the Australian system of six 10-mln-ute
rounds, the grapplers fought
through the third canto without a
fall, with Wolfe getting ont of one
Indian deathlock by rapldwork. and
both trying to take the deciding fall
with airplane spins. Wolfe had Estes
In an arm bar as the gong ended the
round.
Wolfe took the deciding fall with
a peculiar combination of reverse
body press, toe hold and variations of
several other holds, after several min
utes of scuffling.
In the opening battle, Jerry Mar
cus of New York, substituting for
Billy Hagen, who was unable to at
tend because of Injuries, took hi
match from Johnny Boos when Ref
eree Ray Friable disqualified the In
diana grappler for gouging eyes. Mar
cus took the first fall with, a body
press after coming out of the same
hold with a nice bridge. The bell
saved Sooa In the next round, and In
the third frame he hit the ropes so
hard In starting a Son nen berg that
he broke a stringer under the ring.
collapsing the ropes. He took the
fall with body press.
In the Bclcastro-Kennaston scrap.
Kennaston apparently thought he was
doing fine, for In the last fall he
tried to put Referee FTisble away,
too, providing an Interesting little
fight not billed on the card. Frlsble
was more than holding his own. with
Belcastro standing by waiting for an
opportunity to deliver the coup de
grace, when officers entered the ring
and ordered Kennaston to desist. The
marine became angered when Frlsble
refused, to allow him to Choke Bel
castro with Impunity and the top
ring rope.
All In all, the bouts formed one of
the best cards ever seen here, with
each fight replete with thrills. The
Balcastro-Marlne bout supplied the
blood and thunder, the Estes-Wolfe go
added speed and science, and the
opening bout gave the fans all they
desired In the way of rough-house
tactics.

Saturday wilt see the Medford
high school football tesm In what
Is expected to be their hardest en
counter of the season to date, and
Coach Bowerman last ntght ran his
men through a stiff workout after
a week-end layoff, occasioned by
cancellation of the Myrtle Point
game. After flashing a passing at
tack in the Chemawa game Armis
tice Day that wa as deadly as any
thing seen this year, the Tigers fur
ther concentrated on their aerial
bombardment and expect to fill the
osone with flying leather in the
Cave Man game In, an effort to get
past the reputedly rigid Grants Pass
forward wall. i
Grant Pass Is known to possess
a powerful" line, with big. rangy men.
and after rampaging through all
opposition this year, the Tigers have
altered their attack so as to get past
the line of scrimmage on a quick
breaking surprise attack, rather than
on brute power.
The brilliant passing combination
of smith-to-Kunzman will probably
get a chance to scintillate, with
Kunzman recovering rapidly from a
torn knee ligament. Bob "Smith
ereens" Smith has recovered fully
from a bad Charley horse received
In the Chemawa game.
Coaches Bowerman. Klrtley and
Finch, after getting details on the
Grants Pass game at Klamath Falls
Saturday, have their heads together
on new running plays, but refused
to divulge what form the new attack
would take. A hint qf the probable
direction was given in the Chemawa
game, when lateral passes were thrown
to tackles and guards as well as to
backs, and many fans choose to
think that the wind will blow in"
that direction Saturday. Bowerman.
however, was noncommltal on this
point.
A new punting threat was revealed
In the Chemawa gam, when HMte
Jim Bayllss booted out two long,
twisting spirals to set the Indians
deep in their own territory. Bayllss
may handle the kicking assignment
in the Grants Pass game, and ad-
'vanoe Indications are that puntlnf
will play a big part in the encoun
ter. With the exception of Fraley. still
suffering from rib injuries received
in the Klamath Fall game, the
squad I in good condition for the
rrny, and strengthened by the return
of Offard, tackle, and tiny Kosuo
Maruyama, Nipponese flash. Both
saw brief action in the Indian game.
Tho game, to be played at Grants
Pass, la considered one of the
hardest of the year by Medford, and
no chances of underestimating their
opponents Is being taken.
