Chapter 24
BREAKERS AHEAD
A NNE awakened earl)' the next
morning, but even then found
the two older boys Just tearing, and
with them John Neuman.
"NIkkl," he eald, "will yon run up
to the bouse with me a moment?"
Together they climbed the stair
way, to stand at the top, wind
whisking about them, tuning the flra
behind them to a whispering orches
tra, billowing clouds until they
floated along the horizon like bal
loons. "1 forgot to tell yon I'd stored
your things in our basement, and
sent the truck on to Portland. I
imagined we'd have more room than
Tecla, and 1 knew the house wasn't
ready for tbcm, yet."
"That was nlci of, you," Anne as
lured him, and waited. He badn't
111 her up to tell her Just this.
"Nikkl. I talked to the fishermen
't night. 1 don't like to bother you
so soon, but do you happen to know
whether Luke Fornsworth reached a
decision on the fish traps?"
Anne was able to answer this
promptly. "As far as be was con
cerned, there was no decision to
make. He didn't know nntil he
reached Astoria, that there was a
change In his method of running
things.
"Ho talked to Uncle Lee, Tom Far
ley and Rob pretty straight. He said
he'd always kept faith with the men
who'd worked with him, and always
would. Why, what has happened?"
"Crocker cama down a few days
ago. I believe he returned the morn
ing before you came hero."
Anne nodded, and a abarp pain
cut through her at the memory of
the day of his return, proving she
was still able to suffer st mention
of his name.
"He said he was now in charge of
things and he Intemlnd running
them in the modern way. That
whoever brought his haul to the
welgh-ln first would make the sale,
trap or fishermen.
"However, the men say they're
forced to wait until the trap barges
are cleared, even though the fisher
i men are there first.
"It doesn't matter so much now, as
the cannery can use everything
brought In, but with a good run I'm
afraid there'll be trouble."
"But John," Anne seemed as un-
- conscious of calling him by his first
' name as be bad been of calling her
NIkkl. "Knowing this so far In ad
vance, can't they sell to other can
neries?" "That Isn't so easy. We've more
' fishermen than nwessary, about like
every other line of business. Of
' course the number of boats is con-
trolled by t'ae government, but even
' at that, without proper distribu
tion of boats serving designated can
- nerles, some fishermen would have
. to suffer.
"Naturally none of the men work
, trig in harmony with other canneries
. Is going to step out nnd give the old
Farnsworth fishers their place."
' Suddenly Anne remembered the
letter from Judge Kellogg. He said
there had been something In the wl'l
concerning the fish traps. Surely,
awlth Luko'a views on the subject. It
would have been an order to give the
Iflshermon preference.
" JOHN." she said, "tell them to rest
easy. Don't you see. Rob
thought he was going to control
things for me and that was what
gave him the authority he used on
'that trip. Since then he has learned
Cncle Lee Is in charge, and Uncle
Lee Is working under written orders
left by father, by Luke."
"I hope you're right, because"
" Tou mean you're afraid of
trouble between the fishermen and
Tom and Rob and Uncle Lee?" She
felt John was biding the real cause
of the disturbance.
"Yes, I am." he answered, "and I
wish it would either happen before
t leave for Alaska, or bold up until
I return. The fishermen will be the
ones to suffer because they have no
legal right to Interfere."
, "Then you don't believe thej will
.obey the Instructions Luke left?"
' John looked down kt her. "Know
Ing them. NIkkl, I'm afraid that un
.less there Is penalty attached to
their defying these Instructions,
'they'll ignore them. Lee will be will

"I wonder," mused Anne softly, "I

"I've wondered that loo. Well. I

evening, but tomorrow I'll be over

"That's nice of you," Annt
answered, wishing he would tell her
mors of conditions among tbe fisher
men. Then she looked up at him and
smiled. "Only, I'm afraid I'm learn
ing to depend upon you too much,
John."
John, who had started down the
steps, paused and looked back. "Not
too much to please me, NIkkl," he re
torted, "I wlsb . , , but it wishes were

"Rob and Tom would invent a new
kind of flshtrap to beat us out of
them," she chuckled, and was glad
to learn she could laugh at the men
who bad caused her so much heart
ache. Tbe laughed served a second
purpose. It covered the confusion
his words had brought her.
She stood awhile, looking down at
the tall figure In sweater and high
boota striding down the street; stood
until the figure bad crossed the high
way, walked down tbe wharves and
disappeared over the side.
ANNE spent the morning wrltlni
to Judge Kellogg. She sent him
a signed blank check, asking him te
withdraw the money from her home
bank and deposit in another under
the name of NIkkl Nielsen, encloslna
the new signature. She told bim in
detail of her plana, then asked him
to please try to review tbe will, espe
cially that part dealing with cannery
operations.
Llisa returned from town sooo
after lunch with samples of every
thing from wall paper to roof palnl
and Anne, surprised at her sudden
Interest, forgot the past for several
blissful hours.
Togother they went to the old
house, opened the door with their
own key and looked upon It with
possessive eyes. This they would
do, and this. The big room would
be papered in buff to brighten the
many grey days. The windows would
be curtained In dull plaid crash. The
kitchen would be done in yellow and
black. Anne chose pale rose and sli
ver for her room and LUsa, after
changing her mind twenty times, de
cided upon a papor that carried tbe
entire solar spectrum,
"With plain green net window
curtains, though, I'll probably feel
like a flab In aspic."
But cleaning came Brat, to make
way for the house-raising next day.
This was a new experience to Anne,
and b; sundown, she discovered an
amazing number of muscles shi
badn't realized she possessed,
"The bath will steam out tht
aches," Lllsa prophesied as the
made ready to go to the Finnish batb
house, each with a basket contain'
Ing feather soft towels, soap, powdei
and fresh clothing.
Arm In arm they started dowr
tbe twilight smothered street Tc
Anne, who had stayed close by the
bouse since bcr arrival, there was t
feeling of adventure in going even
to Union Town. There was llttl
danger of meeting anyone she knew
or of anyone recognizing the curly
haired girl In one of Mllna'a old
coats, and yet the rush of cars alont
the blgbway which cut through thi
business section confused her.
She drew back Into the shelter ol
Lilsa's sbsdow as a coupe pulled up
close to the curb, laughed at bei
thought that the car was Rob's, then
set her lips In a stralght-ltne to bold
the cry that rushed to them.
The car was Rob's, and seated b
aide blm, ber face clearly revealed
by the match Rob was holding foi
herclgaret. wasSLarlee Farnsworth.
The match went out. Sbarlee
snuggled Into the curve of Rob's arm
and they drove away. And Anne,
still silent, followed Tecla. Milne
and Lllsa into the steam baths.
Anne bad heard of Finnish baths.
She knew there were steam rooms
wbere one sat upon wooden benches,
while Icy water played upon boi
rocks until the room was smothered
In steam, and scented with the
aroma of cedar boughs, softened by
steam and water to brush like fiber.
At Tecls's Insistence she sat on
the lowest tier where the steam, to
which she wss unaccustomed, would
not stifle her. But she was stifled.
