NEWS FROM PORTLAND

They continued their tour, found
two bedrooms on the south side.
Each gravitated to their choice, and
chattering like magpies, made way
to the front of the house. Anne
lipped easily through the window,
stood on the front veranda and
looked up the short flight of steps
to the street, thence to a forest of
young firs emerald green under the
beat of the spring sun, thrusting
their tips into the deep blue of the
ky.
She could live here. She could
work about the house, wear herself
out physically and perhaps And
some peace for her spirit in the re
laxation which must follow. She had
always thought she'd like to garden,
she'd even tried a little. But the gar
dener at her home had objected to
her "messing" among his conven
tional plots and she had given up.
' "It'll take soap and water, lye and
disinfectant," Lllsa was saying from
behind her. "Then we can start
thinking of paint and lumber and
wall paper. And then there'll be fur
niture to buy and . . . Nlkki!" her
rolce arose to a screech.-
Anne turned quickly. Lllsa was
half way out of the window, her feet
on the front veranda, her head, with
Its top knot pitched forward over one
ye, staring out of a broken window

girl In a faded bouse frock, a tangle
of curls, whipped about by a frisky
wind, and that he had expected to
lee a smartly gowned young wom

"The young lady's name Is Nlkkl
Nielsen," said Lllsa, sharply.
Anne saw the blue eyes twinkle,
"Of course," he apologized, "nice to
meet you, Miss Nielsen, yon resem
ble a girl t once met, Ferhapa you'd
bo willing to listen to a message I
have for that girl."
"I ... I'd be delighted," answered
Anne, but the laughter had disap
peared from her face.
"My friend drove your car on to
Portland, after I had telephoned
Judge Kellogg. He arrived Just as
the draymen were leaving your
things at the Judge's house, so as
soon aa they had left, Kellogg hired
a truck and had Clem take them on
back with him. I brought them along
with me."
"Tou mean they are here, now?"
asked Anne In surprise.
- "Judge Kellogg seemed to think
you'd have less trouble taking them
now than later. No one knows ret
that you are not In Portland."
"I convinced him over the tele
phone that you'd be staying on here
tor a few months." Neuman went on
to explain. "You will be, won't youT"
"She will be." stated Lllsa, posi
tively. "We're going to take this
shanty and make a home of It"
Anne looked at the ramshackle
bouse, lookod out on the water, out
to the curving arm of Cape Disap
pointment. Did she really want to
settle hereT
She looked at John Neuman; tall,
sturdy, dependable, he too stood
looking out on the water. She
studied the sun-bronzed, lean (ace,
the Immobility of his expression,
and then he turned towards her end
she caught the full force of his per
sonality In the direct gate of his
sailor-blue eyes.
"Yes." she agreed, disturbed at
the feeling of excitement which
awakened her from the lethargy ol
the past few days, "yes." she repeat
ed. "I am going to stay."
HAVING made her decision, Anne
Joined Lllsa In telling John of
their plans for the house. He lis
tened Intently, then suggested they
have an old country house-raising.
"Closed season Is due In, next
week, and most of us will have time
on our hands. We'll all pitch In, tsar
out and build In, and by the time
the season's over you'll be settled
In your home."
Anne alsi discussed buying a gll-
netter for the Sorkl boys. Again
John listened, then after a tew mo
ments of thought he spoke.
"That wouM rob you of too much
of your money. You're so accus
tomed to having all you need, you
may not appreciate Its value. Re
member, there may be no more com
ing, except for your monthly allow
ance, and then they may be able to

"Whatover that Is," murmured
Anne.
"You'll learn," observed Lllsa,
"and now let's get down to the house
snd And the keys. I'd like to start
working on the place right away."
"We'll wait here," said Neuman,
and Lllsa, after giving him a
straight, bard look, stalked away.
"I've a letter here for you, from
Judge Kellogg," John said as soon
as he heard a bang of a door, Indi
cating Lltsa's arrival at the other
house, "and If you'll excuse me, I'll
try that window Lllia stuck In, and
If I get through, take a look at the
house."
Anne took the letter he handed
her, and hunVtJ down the hill to her
wind-sheltered took.

The opinion that Interest rates on
borrowed mur.ey should be slashed
below fi per cent came today from
President Roosevelt.
He remarked at a press conference
that banks now have huge excess
reserves and that any use of them
would greatly stimulate recovery.
In Georgia, he pointed out, money
borrowed for home construction used
to cost 8, 0 and 10 per cent. Asked
If he had any specific rate In mind,
the president said he certainly want
ed to see it below 8 per cent.
There was no direct Intimation
that he expected to do anything to
force lower charges, but his hearers
gained the distinct Impression he
thought the rates used by govern
ment agencies should bring a further
reduction. I
The Reconstruction corporation has I
been lending money at charges vary
ing from 3'i to 5 per cent; the
Home Owners Loan corporation
charged ft per cent and the federal
housing administration guarantees
no loan that bears more than ft per
cent.

wife's coffin and had them burled
with her.
For eight years the manuscripts re
mained In his wife's grave. Then, at
the Insistence of friends, he consented
to have the poems exhumed and pub
lished. These poems, together with
a. book of ballads and sonnets, and
some translations of Italian poets,
constitute hla entire poetic works,
settl, English poet and painter. Ros-
Rossettl Is best remembered as one
of the more prominent lenders In the
movement to bring painting back to
the simplicity that characterised It
In the middle ages.
