Will Rogers was once dickering with
Amon O. Carter, publisher of the Fort
Worth Star Telegram, Fort Worth,
Texas, for a reporter's Job for his son.

receive.
"Tell you what," said Carter. "I'll
give the boy his board and room
and the regular cub's pay."
"Better not," Will advised; "Just
boarding that boy would break you.!'

800-page book off the press here this
week, Several Items are quoted from
Mr. Perry's famous column, and an
article about him by Edison Marshall
la given In the chapter, "Oregon Au
thors About Each Other."
Another Jackson county columnist
la also featured Orange Jacobs, who
was editor of the Jacksonville Senti
nel In the old days and who wrote
clever Items for that paper that made
him one of the early columnists of
Oregon.

As a decoration on the literary map

Is a drawing of the old church at
Jacksonville. One of the selections
Is a stage Journey from Jacksonville

comprehensive survey from the time
of the Indians, with chapters on the

aries and pioneers, and with full

sists of 43 chapters and Is extensively
Illustrated with manuscripts, title
pages, photographs of sculpture, and
crayon drawings by Bernard Hlnshaw
of Eugene.
The author la Alfred Powers, dean
of the general extension division of
the state system of higher education,
who spent several years gathering
material for the book. He was re
cently appointed state director of
writing and research for the works
progress administration. He gave an
address at the recent CCO conference
held In Med ford.

In a memorandum decision handed
down by circuit Judge Carl B. Wlm
berly of Douglas county. In the autt
of George M. Roberts and othera
agalnet W. E. (Jed) Hlttson, the
Lucky 13 Mining company and the
First National bank, Roberts la award
ed a. Judgment of (9,343.97 against
Hlttson and la held to be halt owner
of the Ruby mining claims.
Other findings of the memorandum
were:
That the so-called "Hlttson shaft"
was located on the Ruby mining
claims; that Hlttson trespassed on
the Ruby claim and removed there
from In excess of (16,000, and that
Hlttson secured a controlling Inter
est In the "Lucky 13" mine and then
refused to proceed against himself.
The memorandum also holda that
Hltteon removed (13,300.81 from the
Ruby claim, which was divided bet
tweon Hlttson, George Lewie and Tom
Spitzner. After deductions for U. 8.
mint assays and services, Roberta Is
granted a Judgment for (6,343.97, and
the same amount awarded to the
"Lucky 13" Mining company. Costs
are also assessed against Hlttson.
Roberts and other stockholders of
the Ruby claims filed suit against
Hlttson for an accounting. Hearing
of the suit was held last July. The
First National bank was named aa a
defendant because It was the depos
itary of Hlttson.
The "Lucky 13" and "Ruby" claims
are located In Siskiyou county In the
Blue Ledge district, Just over the
Oregon-California state line. The two
mines overlap and are practically the
same mine.
Judge Wlmberly holds that he has
no Jurisdiction ovor the question of
title to the mine claims, as they aro
located In Siskiyou county, California.
A suit to decide the title question
haa been filed In auperlor court of
Siskiyou county and la scheduled to
Do heard at Yreka next Monday.
The case, highly Involved, attracted
wide attention among mining men of
southern Oregon and northern Cell-
rornla last winter when reports of the
find were first made public.

Abandon 11 Miles
EUGENE, Nov. 13. (PP) Official
word has been received here that the
Interstate commerce commission has
authorized the Southern Paolflc to
abandon eleven miles of tho west elde
line between Cheshire and the Junc
tion of the line with the Coos bay
branch three miles west of Eugene.
Thla road, extending from Contains
to Eugene, was built more than 35
years ago by Ay Welch, railroad pro
moter, and later sold to the Southern
Pacific.
