FRUIT OF VALLEY
Rogue valley fruit Is being bought
In volume in many foreign markets
today and shippers are of the opinion
that demand for the local product
abroad Is destined to grow substan
tially in the next few years.
It Is only In recent years. H Is
pointed out, that a systematic plan
to penetrate beyond the confines of
the national border has been at
tempted by southern OreJn packing
houses and maximum sales possibili
ties have not yet been attained. With
the featuring of Rogue valley brands,
however, results are now becoming
manifest, shippers assert.
Notwithstanding the war clouds
that have been hovering over the
Mediterranean basin. American Fruit
Growers, Inc., has been selling large
quantities of Newtown apples and
D'AnJou pears In that area, accord
ing to Gordon R. Green, general man
ager. These fruits have been leaving
New York on practically every steam
er, a ship leaving for the Mediterra
nean ports every fortnight Mr. Green
aald.
Among the war zone markets to
which the company's Blue Goose pears
and apples are being shipped are
Jaffa, Haifa, Palestine and Alexan
dria, on both sides of the Suez canal,
Mr. Green stated, adding that the
fruit has been bringing excellent
prices.
"We feel very good about this," Mr.
Green asserted, "because it la very
difficult to get , nnythtng Into the
Mediterranean basin."
Shipment to those markets must
now be covered with mine and war
risk Insurance In addition to the ordi
nary Insurance, making the aggregate
of the three Insurance premiums a
substantial sum, he related.
American Fruit Growers were suc
cessful recently In making a large
sale of Blue Goose New towns In the
Panama Canal Zone, the general
ma naaer reported.
"I believe this Is the first time
for a long while that Medford has
been able to sell large Newtowns In
the Panama Canal territory," he said.
"We feel fairly optimistic about this
because ' It will, without doubt, be
the forerunner of additional sales In
this territory for our Newtown apples
from Medford."
Other markets to which American
Fruit Growers Is shipping Rogue val
ley fruit include countries of 'Central
and South America, Europe and the
Orient, Mr. Green stated.
A few weeks ago the compsny sent
a box of Blue Goose Cornice pears to
O. O. MclntjTe when he stated In his
syndicated column that he could not
obtain pears In New York restaurants.
In a recent column he referred to
the fruit, explaining what a Cornice
pear was like, stating that It was
grown principally in southern Oregon
and that it was very "succulent."
