police, who were, however, unable
to locate the robbera.

4 ESCAPE HURTS
IN PHOENIX AREA
In an auto eraah between a ma
chine driven by Mia. M. MoOolleater
of Ashland and one driven by George
Stereos on tha Pacific highway one
mllo south of Phoenix, directly In
front of the Stevens home, four per
sons almost miraculously escaped
serious Injury Friday night at 11 o'
clock. According to state polios, who In
vestigated tha crash, both cars were
travelling south, tha Ashland auto
In the rear. Aa Stevens, riding alone,
waa turning Into the driveway of his
home on the left side of the highway,
the MacCollcster car hit hla auto
broadside, sending It spinning Into
the ditch on the left side. Tha Ash
land auto followed, akldded In a cir
cle, and looped Into the sama ditch
JO feet beyond, turning turtle and
coming to a rest on Ha top.
The only Injury received by any
of tha three passengers of tho Mac
Collcster oar, Including Miss Phoebe
MacCollestcr, daughter of the driver,
and Mr. and Mra. Prank Plorce. all of
AHhlsjid, was by Mr. Pierce, who re
ceived further Injury to an old leg
fracture.
Stato police aald that tha occu
pants of the Ashland oar admitted
that Stevens might have signaled for
Ilia turn, but the night being partic
ularly dork, they had not seen his

A. Carroll, special representative of
the Federal Deposit Insurance cor
poration, after conferring with bank
ers, and viewing the local situation.
Mr. Carroll, whom office la In
Washington, D. C, la making a tour
to obtain the viewpoint of bankers
regarding the Insurance, corporation.
He credited the general banking
Improvement to the Insumnce on
bank deposits and to the returning
confidence of the public. Deposit In
surance will remain a permanent fea
ture of the bank government, he pre

for the Will Rogers memorial fund

bune. The campaign opened on last
Monday.
As stated before, no solicitation for

to national headquarters of the Will
Rogers Memorial commission will
represent those In Medford and

INCREASES PACK
A small but lusty Infant Is the
Willis Sttehl Canning company of
Rogue River, packers of the iniMwui
irigly popular "Wcl-Pak" brand of
solid pack tomatoes. Started In 1930
as a home venture, putting out 30
cases that year, the little cannery has
grown until now. In 1936.' they have
an output of 80 oases.
All of the work In the cannery la
now done by the Sttehl family In
their home, but they are planning on
erecting a building for the operations
next year. The excellence of the pack
has caused a demand far exceeding
the eupply. and the three Medford
stores, which handle the entire out
put, have Indicated a desire to have
ft larger volume next year. Sttehl
hopes to employ a battery of helpers
before many more seasons roll around.

cant dwellings, extent of the "doubl-
lng-up" of families and the char
acter of vacant houses.
Out of 2617 dwelling units In Med
ford there were, at the time the
survey was made, only 69 vacanclea.
Of this number 87 were single fam
ily houses, while the remaining 12
were apartmenta. The classification
of the vacancies la as follows: Num
ber In good livable condition 28. fair
condition 14. and In poor and unde
sirable condition 27. Of theae 28
desirable vacancies It waa found that
approximately SO per cent were being
held vacant during the time wiey
were on the market for Bale, while
several were . already rented, but
were awaiting occupancy by the new
tenant. This provca conclusively that
there are very few desirable houses
for rent In Medford and that the
property owner who will put his
rent property In good condition can
be aasured of a tenant.
It la alao Interesting to note that
there are now 96 families In Mod-
ford who are doubling'up with other
families, and that If each of these
should attempt to secure a house for
Itself It would not be possible to
accommodate them.
The results of these conditions are

John P. Marlon, passed away at his
home at Butte Falla where be had
resided for tha past 17 yeara, at 7:50
p. m. Friday at tha age of 70.
He waa born at New Sharon, Iowa
In November. 1855. Mr. Marlon wa a
member of Spring Valley lodge, I. O.
O. F. In Iowa.
. Besides hla wife, Florence Marlon,
he leaves two daighters, Mrs. Elmer
Oott of Butt Falls and Mra. Hownrd
Boughton, New Sharon, Iowa. Two
sons are now deceased. He also lenvea
one alster, Ella Hansen of West Port,
Calif., and eight grandchildren.
Deceased haa been a member of
the Christian church for forty yeara.
Funeral services will he held at the
Conger chapel by Rev. Smith of Butte
Falla at 3:30 p. m. Monday, arter
which the body will be forwarded to
New Sharon, Iowa, accompanied by
Mra. Marlon.
