PUBLIC LIBRARY
IS BUSY PLACE
A count of the attendance at the
Public Library waa taken this week,
showing from 330 persona on the
quietest days of ttie wcett to over 500
on the busiest days. Reference ques
tions are received daily in Increasing
numbers and range from the most
personal to the most practical.
It la hoped that all readers will
watch the new book lists, and that
they will express their nwls and
wishes In the matter of books to the
members of the staff. In this way
everyone can be served. The library
will be able to have many of the
outstanding books of the fall and
winter, but it will be impossible to
keep a large supply of new titles on
demand, or to duplicate titles.
center, the southern Italian army has
removed another stone from Its path
toward Harar, the walled city of Ethi
opia. t
Makale, like Aduwa. Aksum and
Adigrat before It. fell without re-,
st stance.
Swaggering In the van of the In- ;
vsdlng troops was Raa Halle Selassie
Gtig&a, the Benedict Arnold of Ethi
opia. He went straight to the castle
of former King John for Makaie was
once a royal seat and established
himself by right ot might aa gov
ernor of the rich Tigre province.
There was unconcealed Joy among
the Ras and his tribesmen, who In
being permitted to be the first to
enter the town, were honored even
above Mussolini's own favorite bersa
glerl .from whose hats gaily flutter
the feathers or cockb. thus la Gug
sal's treachery rewarded with victory.
Flat Restored
The Italian flag was raised above
the fort of MakMe the fort from
which In 1896 was torn down by
triumphant Ethiopians. The soldiers
of Rome, now more than 100 miles
deep Into the black kingdom of nver
conquered Ethiopia, took up fortified
positions on the south of the town,
looking toward new objectives.
The continued refusal of the raw
meat-eating, fight-loving Ethiopians
to challeng the Italian advance means
that Emperor Selassie has a definite
strategy arranged, a strategy that
calls for pitched battle under condi
tions and on terrain which he, and
not the Italians, will choose.
