the beaver Is an animal of such eco
nomic Importance that It needs pro
tection. .
In fact. Mr. Branson pointed out to
the Mall Tribune today, where there
are beaver colonies the soli Is 20 times
as productive of forage sa where there
are none. Beavers, he also said, pre
vent sol! erosion by damming up
streams and keeping the earth
watered over a large area. They do
a lot of other good that no one thinks
about. Mr. Branson related In scien
tific terms slightly over the head of
your correspondent, and Mr. Branson
ought to know, for he Is the Junior
district agent of the United States
biological survby, stationed at Rose
burg. Causes Damage
Unfortunately, the beaver does a
considerable damage to crops, trees
and river banks, aiut for that rea?
son the farmers do not like the little
animals, Mr. Branson related. The
farmer. In fact, would like to see the
creatures removed to sections where
they cannot chop down fruit tTees
by eating away the trunk to get a
food supply of bark.
That's why Mr. Branson la here. He

ers from areas where they are In
flicting crop damage to sections at
headwaterse where they may cat and
play and build without annoying any
one. The nearest beaver colony to Med
ford, Mr. Branson said. Is on Bear
creek near Jackson Hot Springs. This
colony and others in thl general lo
cality are to be moved to quarters
that are more desirable, from the
beavers' and farmers' point of view.
Make Smart rets
Beavers are smart little animals
that are kind and considerate, Mr.
Branson said, adding that they
quickly become pets. They never
should be considered merely as pelts
for fur coats, he stated, aa their eco
nomic value when alive la transcend-,
ant.
Mr. Uranson and Mr. Olson had a
beaver with them today. It will be
ptacpd on exhibition In a MedTord
store window so that It may be view
ed by all who are Interested In seeing
a braver at close range.
The so-called social security bill Is
by no means aocial security, but Na
tional Disgrace, and our legislators
who are blesaed with vision can see
the handwriting on the wall, for, In
the words of Franklin D. Roosevelt,
"The power of the people once arous
ed In a fixed purpose is the most Ir
resistible farce in the world."

To the Editor
It was astonishing to see with what
vehemence you condemned our state
legislators for their action regarding
the Townsend old age pension plan In
your editorial on October 31. It la
also very surprising to know that any
supposedly well-Informed person
would call followers of Dr. Townsend
a political minority. Also surprising
that you should make the statement
that the legislature was called to act
on the social security bill, and then
condemn tlipm so bitterly for doing
Just that, for there never has been
any real aocial security plan except
that Introduced by Dr. Townsend,
and now favored by millions, of In
telligent people throughout our land.
