MEMORIES
ANNE listened to Judge Kellogg
tell her she wan not the daughter
of Luke and Luclnda Farnsworth Id
bewilderment.
"But I've always been their daugh
ter," ahe murmured inanely. "Why
Judge, Mrs. Harney was saying not
less than an hour ago that she re
membered mother coming home
from the hospital with me."
"Yes, Ajine." agreed the Judge,
"Luclnda didn't know the difference,
herself, then. If you'll remember
what they've told you, Luclnda be
came ill at Crescent City, while on a
trip there with Luke. They rushed
her to the hospital. Her baby was
born there, and died. Tour mother

of your birth. Fearing the effect the
truth would have upon Lucinda, you
were given to her as her own and not

buildings were grey, the rain clouds
which hung low in the sky were
grey. And the girl who looked out
of the window felt as though she
were ateeped In a greyish mist of
conftiBcd heartache.
"TP I could cry, I'd feel better, not
I so smothery," she whispered. "I
suppose I'm stunned now, like I was
that . . . that awful night. Soon I'll
realize."
The thought was terrifying. She
couldn't be a nobody. She Jumped to
her feet and sped to the next room
where Judgo Kellogg was staring
out of the window.
"Judge " ahe tried to control the
hysterical note In her voice, "Judge,
who am I?"

had aat at the bar of justice sen

In a moment she would awaken.
This was another of those terrible
dreams which had haunted her slnco
tho night of the trngedy. There was
a clock ticking slowly in the room.
Like the clocks at school. Luclnda . . .
Luko . . . but why hadn't they told
her?
A MOMENT of rebellion swept over
her. Why had they taken her to
their hearts, poured their lovo and
care over her with such lavlshness,
then withdrawn everything at a

Judge Kellogg motioned to tho

drawn from the cooler and placed
before hor. She looked at It stupidly.
He picked It up and thrust It Into

Visitors meeting her for the first

And sho would rush to a mirror

Sho remembered how, unable to
copy Ludmla's small-boned grace
fulness, she had taken to standing,
feet apart, hands rlasped behind her
back, chin out. like Luke, and how
they'd InuRhed, and Luclnda had
cried a little at the ludicrous little
figure she'd msde.
"Sorry I had to tell you like this
almost Impossible to speak. He
looked at the modlshly clad girl, at
the white face dominated by the
wide-Bet ilark eyes and darkor brows,
at the brave uplift of the chin.
"We'll find out . . . somehow," ho
promised.
"That means you don't know," she
declared. "Ploaso won't you tell me
everything? It's going to be easier
to know the truth than face any
more uncertainty like this."
"Let's go back and sit down," he
auggested and, arm about hor shoul
der, he diroctcd her to the Inner
room.
"Judge, wouldn't adoption pnpera

"They would Anne. If Ihnra

Anno'a eyes wore wide, calm now.
She nodded. "I understand. If he can
prove I'm not adopted, then I won't
be ahle to ask for my share of the
estate."
Kellogg nodded. "That seems to
be tho Idea, If he would only be con
tont to stop there."
"What do you mean?".

ucarly 300 to the Jeweler from whom
Rothschild had bought It.
When Rothschild heard of this he
bought the box ngain from tho Jew
eler and attain presented it to Carafn.
This buying and selling of the snuff
box continued until the baron's death
and after that his sons continued
the practice.

origin, or at least a dog bred to Its
present condition In Germany. There
they were used In hunting wild boars
and were known as boarhounds. The
breed was first recognized by English
dog shows and deemed eligible for
registry In 1883. In tho following
year the name was changed to Great
Dane, although no- reason for the
change had been recorded.
