yea ra beginning with 1030, survey
revealed.
Included were 37 of the 47 insti
tutions In the United Stairs haying
endowments of more than $6,000,000
representing all sections of the coun
try. The gifts and bequests -were com
piled by the John Price Jones cor
poration, fund-raliing consultants.
Prom 1030 to 1933, giving declined
sharply. In 1933-34, another decline
was rpwlatered, but of far less severe
proportions, the compilation shows.
The total amounts for the four aca
demic years were:

An actual upturn was noted In giv
ing to eight women's colleges Includ
ed in the compilations. They receiv
ed in 1933-34, 1,080.171.81 as against
980.281.73 in 1932-33. The total
amount received by all Institutions
through bequeats rose from 3,802,
661.03 In 1932-83 to 5,230,186.11 In
1933-34. On the other hand, gifts
fell from w,o78,222,18 to 15,819,
877.18, It was shown.

Early next year the Bristol Aircraft
company will market n radial aero
engine which is the quietest motor
ever fitted to a fylng machine. After
10 years of experiment the firm's
engineers have perfected, on a com
mercial scale, a sleeve-valve engine
capable of operating at the high
stresses necessary In an aero motor.
For several months a 600 horse
power unit, weighing only 750 pounds
has been In operation with different
type aircraft. Jt has been tried by
the sir ministry, whose experts have
subjected It to more stringent tests
than uaual. 1
Using the sleeve-valve system for
aircraft means several advantages.
The size of the engine Is less, the heat
generated in the exhaust pipes Is low
ered, petrol and oil consumption Is
smaller, and noise is considerably re
duced. The Bristol engineers believe that
this type engine could, with effective
silencers and expansion chambers, be
made almost as noiseless as that of a
j luxury motor car.

come by air ministry experiments at
Parnborough. They have designed
propellers which make little noise.
"It feaaible, with this new Bristol
engine, that during the next few
years, manufacturers will be able to
produce a flying machine, which, at
a height of 5000 feet, will be inaud
ible," one expert declared.
