Beverly Hills districts, but the flames
continued toward Malibn lake.
The Mallbu lake sector Is dotted
with hundreds of residences of mo
tion picture players. The Los Ange
les county fire warden said wind con
ditions were unfavorable, and forest
ry crews from nearby counties were
augmenting local firefighters tn at
tempts to halt the flames.
There were 600 firefighters today on !
this front, and 450 more were to be
placed there, to start a backfire In I
an effort to halt the flames at the I
crest of Corral canyon, southwest of i
the lake district.
The fire raged at the head of Cor- I
ral canyon, nine and one-half miles
Inland from the ocean, and extended
to within three miles of the colony
of movie homes at the lake.
Sweeps Rlrh Area !
While county forestry department J
officials said they could not accur- j
ately estimate the damage to the i
whole of the Mallbu district from the j
fire, It was pointed out that land j
swept over by the flames on a 10 j
mile front ranged from $150 an acre j
for agricultural property, to more j
than $1,000 an aero for restricted ',
homes! tea.
Potential damage from soil erosion
will be great, authorities said, and j
the hazard of slides along the Rose- !
velt highway from Santa Monica to I
Oxnard will be apparent with the j
first heavy rains of the winter. This ;
area of the highway is blocked by j
slides after rains every winter. -j
Concern for the safety of the pala-
tlal residences of Hollywood film play-
ers along the Mallbu strand was re
lieved today after the flames , had ;
been beaten back by a large force of ;
workers.
Another film settlement, at Mallbu
La Costa, faced a water shortage,
however, as the flames leaped high up ;
along Mallbu creek and swept over ,
the Mallbu dam pump house that
supplies water for the settlement.
