Over $3,000,000 have been spent by
Pont lac Motor Co. in preparation for
the production of 228,000 cars in
1936. according to H. J. Kllnger, pres
ident and general manager of the
company.
"Although no radical change In
design are being made In the new
cars, & large sum of money like this
le rtquired for new machinery, manu
facturing equipment, etc., that will
be used in practically doubling the
capacity of the plant," said Mr. Kin
der. "Large acale production of ft
modern and up-to-date automobile
like Pontlac calls for great financial
resources." x
Expenditures were made aa follows:
100.000 for office building renova
tion; M70.000 for re-tooltng the sheet
metal plant; $500,000 for re-tooling
the motor plant; $180,000 for re-tool-lng
the sheet metal finishing and as
sembly plant; $500,000 for renovation
and re-tooling foundry and $400,000
for body dies.
, In the motor plant the scheduled
increase In production has necessi
tated duplicate units of many of the
machines, as well as several new and
modern pieces of installation.
The connecting rod department hie
been redesigned, with many new ma
chines and fixtures. A hujc ro.o
matlo machine drills 600 wrist pin
holes per hour. There are new mul
tiple drilling machines for the crank
end of the rods which permit drill
ing before the rods are cut in two,
thus removing surplus stock and
trains and resulting In better rods.
New Uamond boring equipment also
has been Installed In this department.

Spectacular Scenery Along the Route or the New Central Highway of
Peru, Through the Andea Mountaina
SOARING far above the clouds to
an elevation of 14,645 feet, 11
Ford V-8 cars recently tried out
the new Central Highway of Peru,
which runs for 110 miles between
Lima and forma. Every one of
the cars functioned perfectly de
spite the great altitude and stiff
climb. The first in to Tarma set
a record for the trip cf four houra
27 minutes. The next Ford was
three minutes behind.
An interview in La Prensa, Lima
newspaper, with Senor Victor
Larco H., gives some idea of what
Peruvians think of their new na
tional highway above the clouds.
"The Central Highway," said Senor
Larco, "gave me an impression of
grandeur comparable only to the
spectacular creations of Nature,
which, encircled by mountains, have
been seen for the first time
thanks to this new highway." The
great reduction In railroad fares
on the Ferrocarrll Central, in an
effort to ward off bus transporta
tion, shows the enormous com
mercial movement that will follow
this new means of travel.
The now highway, which ranks
with any in the world for spectac
ular scenery, is, expected to attract
many tourists who will at last be
able to penetrate the Peruvian
Andea by road.
Final assembly and Inspection
changes are more progressive' and
more efficient and were made neces
sary by the new car design which re
quires an even finer stnndfird of
workmanship than heretofore.
The Inspection department now has
a definite Aid concentrated location
rather than belpg scattered, thus per
mitting better inspection work.
Manufacturing changes in the Pon
tine plant for 1036 fit In perfectly
with the car engineering and design
of the new cars which has been a
plan of refinement and. perfection of
existing fundamental and basic stan
dards and practices.

OF
PLYMOUTHS FRAME
DETROIT (8pl.) Details of a
new type of automobile frame con
struction, perfected after years of
development work, were revealed here
today.
Listed as one of the outstanding
engineering Improvement on the
1936 motor cars, the new frame nas
been designed with torsional rlgtdlty
as Its basic requirement. It will be
a major feature on all 1036 Plym
outh models, according to officials
of the Plymouth Motor corporation.
The new models will be formally an
nounced October 26.
With the new type construction.
Plymouth engineers have Increased
the strength and rigidity of the
automobile frame without adding
materially to Its weight. The new
frame Is said to be nearly twice aa
rigid against twisting forces, yet It
weighs only a few pounds more than
previous frames used in other models.
The torsional strength of the new
frame has been tested by supporting
the frame at three-wheel locations
and permitting the fourth location
In the front to hang free. Since
the unaprune reaction at a front
wheel la about 650 pounds, the twist
consist! of moving 650 pounds from
one front whec to the other. Under
this test, the new Plymouth frame
twlsta between tW and 6!4 degrees.
Other production frames, twist as
much as 12 degrees'.
Plymouth engineers look upon the
frame aa the "backbone" of the
modern motor car. They have made
thousands of tests with different
types of frames In recent yeara, seek
ing wsys to further strengthen this
vltsl unit. The new frame represents
the results of their research.
The depth of the aide ralla and
X-brace members of the new frame
have been Increased from t to 814
inches. The box sections at the rssr
have been extended and the box
sections afr, the front have Been
widened. '
The X-brace Intersection, Import
ant as a nucleus for the entire'
frame, haa been completely rede
signed to form one unit. Previously,
the Intersection waa mads up of
four sections. X-brace members Join
the aide-rails at a less sharp angle
Bnd taper to a maximum permls
able depth at the Intersection.
The X-member now extend far
ther to the front and rear, and
are securely welded Into the side
rails to form box-seotlons for the
full length of the frame.
