65 registered cows, proved to the
world last night that trained fingers
can atlll-ooax milk from the source
without lid of machinery.
With a squeeie and a squirt and
null, the rosy-cheeked milkmaids
raised the lines In their galvanized
palls with foaming, warm fluid. As
they worked, one sang, off key:
"Oh, If I had a cow that gave such
milk,
"I'd dress her In the finest silk
"And feed her on the best of hay.
"And milk her forty times a day."
Some Are stubborn.
Borne of the wistful-eyed cows,
dragged from their stalla at the Pa
cific International Livestock exposi
tion before regular milking time,
and wary of the applauding throng,
elung stubbornly to their milk.
To one of these, a milkmaid quoted
ioftly an old nursery Jingle which
went like this:
"Cushy cow bonny, come let down
thy milk
"And I will give thee a. gown of silk,
"A gown of silk and silver tea,
It thou wilt let down Viy milk to
me."
Heartened, the bovine let down

Timekeeper John H. Dodge of De
troit, Mich., walked up and down
behind the long row of ouerrueys.

happily, although he Is president of
the Dodge Emulsor corporation.
Hillsboro Olrl Wins
At the time limit, the bucket and
milk of Catherine Boge, Hlllaboro.
Ore., weighed 13 pounds, la ounces
(the bucket weighed about tin
pounds). She won a silver trophy
and 18.
Drago Bkoko, Clackamas, Ore., maid,
was second with six ounces less milk
than Miss Boge. and Vera Hammond.
Bsttle Ground, Waah., was third
with 14 ounces less than the winner.
It was the first milkmaid con
test at the exposition since 1922.
and directors had wondered If there
were any farm girls these days who
knew how to milk. The entrants
ranged In age from 18 to 60.
Talent Townsend
f. Meeting Tonight
The regular weekly meeting of the
Ashland Townsend club has been
postponed to this evening at 7:30,
and will be held In Talent at the In
Tltatlon of Townsend supporters of
that city.
The principle speaker will be the
Rev. W. R. Balrd, of the Medford
Chrlatlan church. .
After the regular club bualncss is
finished, a, special program will be
presented, Including songs by the
Ashland quartet, a piano solo by Miss
Bubolv, a recitation by Mr. Engols
and several other Interesting features.

from explosion of an oil truck, de
stroyed one well and partially de
stroyed two others last night, before
it was brought under control.
The fire broke out in the heart of
the vast Tldeland oil -fs, on wells
leased by the Bruce brothers.

Bashed By Girl

between J. O. Milne, railway motor
man, and Jessie Masterson. Then they
broke up. Today Milne told Municipal
Judge Schoenfeld Miss Masterson
kicked In the fenders of his auto
mobile, scratched the paint, and
heaved a rock through one of the
windows. Miss Masterson wUl see the
Judge next Tuesday.
BATTLEFIELD WILL IS
FILED AFTER YEARS
LOS ANGELES, Oct. 11. (UP)
A will, dated "somewhere in France.
Oct. 31, 1018," waa on file In probate
court today. The strange testament
was drawn on a battlefield 11 days
before the World war ended and six
days before the writer, Carl A. Shad
owden, was killed in battle. The will
was filed by his brother-in-law,
Chester Hendrlck who said ''all other
relatives are dead.",

of chewing gum. part of a shipment
made through his postofflce during a
gum manufacturer's advertising cam
palgn. The manufacturer didn't want
the left over gum. Neither did Selden
stlcker. He took it to a negro orphans
home.

John Bockove, 47, played with the
steam valve of a locomotive in the
shops here. He made it huff and puff
and finally it blew htm 20 feet away
from off the top of the locomotive.
