attempt to entangle Italy in frontier
incidents with the adjacent Sudan.
Reinforcements of native troops have
been sent to the region.
The Italian field headquarters an
nounced today that a slight advance
has taken place on the southern,
Somallland front in the last few days
"in order to rectify the frontier."
General Rudolfo Grazlani sent his
troops forward In the Dolo and Wal
wal regions, it was announced, but
they are now halted and are remain
ing on the defensive. No resistance
was encountered.
It was believed that this was the
beginning of a movement intended to
result In the capture of Harar, stra
tegic capital of the province by the
same .name and the "Garden of Ethi
opia" to u n 1 te 1 1 a ly 's colon les of
Eritreai and Somaliland and to join
the northern and southern armies.
Rush Road Work
In the Aduwa region, officers work
ed alongside men today with pick,
shovel and dynamite in an effort to
push up roads to the advance troops
and to keep them supplied with food
and ammunition.
The biggest battle thus far has not
been against the Italians, but against
the tremendous difficulties offered by
the terrain. -Narrow roads, hastily
thrown together on the base of the
old caravan routes, are overcoming
the huge differences In altitude.
The enormous difficulties In con
structing roads led officers to believe
today that their advance Into Ethi
opia may be halted shortly.
Italy may be contented to occupy
the province of Tigre and part of the
province of Amhara. the officer said.
The population of Aduwa was re
turning to normal life in the historic
city while -Italians were making a
heroic effort to run roads into the
town in order to supply their troops
with victuals and munitions.
The people of Aduwa, who used bar
ter in the first C'.ya after the occupa
tion Sunday, exchanging chickens for
water and egga for empty tin cans,
now use lire as a medium of exchange.
They char Re 50 lire (about $4) for a
chicken and .SO centeslml for an egg.
