None of us can plead ignorance
to the tremendous number of fires
In the country each year, nor to
the knowledge that fire Is one or
the most terrifying and rapidly
spreading "accidents" conceivable.
Not being Ignorant of the cause, it
la logical to say that only stupidity
and negligence can result In so great
a toll of property and life annu
ally. It should be hard to be for
getful when It Is so easy for a We
to be maimed by fire, for whole
towns to be razed, every personal
possession snatched by ' ravaging
flames.
The fire which has gone down In
history as the Chicago fire occurred
on October 9th, 1871, hundreds of
lives being lost In Its wake. Its only
virtue waa the fact that It resulted
In the Inauguration of Plre Pre

commemorating In this city.
By simple little precautions. In
the home and out, flrea could be
greatly reduced In our country. It
only every single man, woman and

People seldom realize that the
association of ' electric wires and
burning flames Is a very natural
one. Mnrely a neglected short cir
cuit, a bnrcd wire, or hastily pulled
out plug can be the first step to
ward a house demolished by flames.
It Is well worth while to have an
elcctrlcan look over your wiring
apparatus every few months, as the
few cents you pay him may save
your household from sorrow. If you
have an oil atove, too, be sure that
It Is kept clean and that nothing
Inflammable comes In contact with
It.
Try to keep yards and hallways
free of gathering rubbish, which
contains greasy substances or dry
substances, as these are quick to
Ignite, and It Is particularly outside
of the home that people are free
with matches and lit smokes.

Father Zacheua Ma her, provincial of
Jcsuults at San Jose, Cal., was today
named assststant general of the Bo
clety of Jesuits for the United States.
GYPSY IS FINED
$145 FOR THEFT
Mary Jullano, the buxom gypsy who
was charged with stealing $56 from
the person of William Stucker,. was
fined $145 and costs of $4.50 in Jus
tice court late Friday afternoon. She
pleaded guilty through her attorney,
Rawlca Moore.
Two male members of the gypsy
band paid the fine and costs and also
returned the $55 to Mr. Stucker. In
Imposing sentence Justice W. R. Cole
man said he would be lenient because
the woman waa the mother of a small
child.
Mr. Stucker charged that the gyp
sy snatched his wallet containing
the money when she stopped him on
Crater Lake highway and asked him
the way to Eagle Point.
Enrollment Gains O. 8. C.
CORVALLI8. Ore., Oct. 5. (AP)
Registration at Oregon State college
was at the 2990 mark today, more
than 500 above last year's fall regis
tration. It was expected further late
registrations would boost the total
to over 3000.

Tuesday night, October 8th, at
7:30 o'clock, members of the Com
munity Chest executive committee,
and the workers who will solicit
chest funds during; the drive on
October B, 10, and 11, will meet
for a short meeting at the Jackson
county courthouse auditorium, ac
cording to an announcement today

chest campaign. Pinal Instructions
will be given to campaign workers

the workers that the meeting will
be a brief one.

city and surrounding community
