How Pacificists Promote War
BECAUSE of the IUlio-Ethiopian situation, England faces a
political crisis. Lord Ponsonby has resigned. He resigned
at the outbreak of the world war for the same reason. He is a
pacifist.
.Other leaders in the Labor party threaten to do the name
thing. They don't like the idea of invoking sanctions against
Italy, if Mussolini insists upon war.
To take such action on the basis of DEVOTION TO WORLD
PEAf!E. strikes us. as strangely inconsistent. It is as if, a citi
zen should object to police action, on the ground enforcement of
the law, would be disturbing the peace.
ENGLAND is a member of the League of Nations. The cove
nant nraanrihaa sanctions. or coercive economic action,
when a member of the Leagues,
waging an aggressive war. ;
Obviously such action is in
charter member of the League.
Far from being a step toward
effective step to PREVENT
war.
The motive behind it. is not

responsibility, but Italy s.
IN fact England's position, as we see it, is very much like that
of the London police force in case of a threatened local
uprising. The sworn duty of the police force is to uphold law
and order, and prevent destruction and bloodshed.
Assume the trouble makers, barricade themselves in a house,
and fire upon anyone who approaches.
All right. The London police surround the house, cut off
liuht and heat and water, and await results. Internationally
speaking they are invoking sanctions.
WOULD Lord Ponsonby and his fellow pacifists, oppose such
action, on the eround of their devotion to law and order
and their opposition to the use of force t
WflivHv. And vet essentially that is their position in oppos
ing their present government, when it takes the only effective
actionjegalized by the League, to prevent' Italy from invading
and crushing Ethiopia.
MOST right-thinking people are THEORETICALLY pacifists.
That is thev acknowledee the horror, the brutality and
the usclessncss of war, as a medium of international settlement.

Mussolini has been banking on from the outset. He figured
England would never secure sufficient support at home to justi
fy a firm stand against his invasion ot Ethiopia, so ne arro-
eantlv and insolently, dofied Britain's threats, and rattling tne
sabre proceeded on his swashbuckling way.
IN other words these professed Jovers of peape in England, have
by their muddle headed fanaticism, not only failed to pro

done everything they could to FURTHER war.

. QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
v Tonsil Removal
Is a person more likely to develop
cancer of the throat from the scar
left by surgical removal of the ton
alls? (L.C.)
Answer No. If the tonsils are In
fected or troublesome, removal by any
good method would rather decrease
the chance of developing cancer of
the throat. In my opinion diathermy
extirpation of the tonsils is preferable
to old-fashioned snare and guillotine
"surgery."
