protege of the dashing actor.
Miss Barrte announced last night.

Furthermore, Miss Barrle, who
changed her name from Jacobs after

quarreled, Barrymore gathered up and

FOLLOWING BLAZE
NOME, Alaska, Sept. 17.-(UP) A
new and prospectively greater Nome
rose today on the shore of Norton
Sound, one year after the disastrous
fire that roared through the fsmed
mining town September 17, 1034.
The new Nome is far from com
plete. Lack of building materials and 1
finances have prevented much pro
jected rebuilding. Many of the aban
doned shacks dragged In on skids
over the tundra still are la use. A
new federal building, authorised by
congress, has not yet been started.
But new buildings and streets that
are straight, Instead of ancient struc
tures along winding thoroughfares
trod by Jack London and other vet
erans of the gold rush, show the start
that has been made. A new echool
will be ready soon.

MOSCOW (UP) A possible tight
ening of the Sovidt divorce law to
insure the economic care of chil
dren Is foreshadowed here following
an official Inquiry Into marriage
and divorce.
It was found, for tnatance. that
the divorce rate in Moscow was
rising rapidly; in many cases mar
riages were concluded merely to ob
tain a room for one of the parties
in tnls overcrowded city, and nu
merous instances were found where
fathers had deserted their children
or left penniless wives without ali
mony. While It was made plain that the
sovle union does not Intend to
make marriage or divorce difficult
for those rightfully desiring either,
the official newspaper "Izvestta,"
suggested new regulations correcting
abuses tn the present system. Now
couples may be divorced merely on
the application of either party.
Fnmlly protection Ihutmnded
"Soviet working families and soviet
children," Izvestia said, "must be
protected against despicable and foul
persons."
The following corrections In the
present system were suggested:
1. To forbid the granting of di
vorces to parents unless they sign
a written agreement providing for
the care of their children.
a. To adopt a more severe policy
toward fathers who desert their fam
ilies or fall to pay alimony after
having agreed to do to.
3. To adopt measures to prevent
"fictitious marriages," that Is, those
contracted for such mercenary pur
poses as obtaining a room and not
with the Intention of establishing a
real marital partnership.
An Investigator, sent to various of
fices of "ZAQS," the Soviet mar
riage bureau, discovered a number
of Interesting facts.
Student's Cose Cited.
For Instance, there was the case
of the student who, after having
been married one day, appeared early
the next to apply for a divorce.
Asked the reason, he said he came
to Moscow from the provinces to
study and was unable to find a
room. A middle-aged woman offered
to rent him half of hers, but ex
plained that before he could be reg
istered with the house committee

must sign marriage papers.

the boy agreed. He went to the room

Investigator found that more re
quests fur divorce came from middle-aged
persons than youths.
He discovered that divorcee here
were Increasing rapidly. Whereas in
1034 there were 87 divorces per 10U
marriages, the rate for the first five
months of 1936 had Increased to 44
divorcee per 100 marriages.
