SCIENCE has discovered glands are a potent factor in human
behaviour.
Take the adrenal glands, for example. When a person is
enraged, these glands are stimulated. They pour a certain
element into the blood stream which inhibits the cerebral pro
cesses on one hand, and increases tremendously the stamina and
muscular strength of the individual, on the other. He is, as the
saying goes, fighting mad.
IT IS the same with fear. When the individual is suddenly
faced with an alarming and unexpected danger, the first
reaction may be one of paralysis. He is scared stiff, bis hair
stands on end, his eyes bulge, he is rooted to the spot, as the
shilling shockers have it. But this is merely the adrenal glands,
under exceptional stimulus, getting ready for immediate action.
The first reaction is followed by a second. Again the adrenals
pour this stimulating element into the blood stream, and the net
result is the same as in the case of sudden rage.
The individual ceases to be primarily a reasoning animal and
becomes (incidently for his own protection and the perpetuation
of his race) a fighting one.
IN VIEW of the fact that the population of the entire world,
at the nresent time, can be nrettr well divided between tilde.
who are either MAD at something or someone; or AFRAID of
someone or something.
Perhaps the explanation of the present confusion and moral
chaos, which besets us, lies not in politics, economics, fascism,
communism or any of the other isms; but simply in the general
and all prevailing glandular excitement of humanity in the
mass.
At least such an explanation, allows one to rationalize the
situation, whereas no other explanation we have heard, leads
to anything but the disheartening conclusion that the whole
world has just gone stark MAD.
TAKE the mess in Europe at the present time. As we see it
there is nothing inherent in that situation, which precludes
a peaceful adjustment, provided the lenders just use common
sense and at reasonable intervals, sane, balanced judgment.
Yet there they are at the present writing apparently rushing
pell mell over the precipice to a perfectly needless and suicidal
war. . '
In a less marked degree a similar psychology prevails in
this country, and has prevailed for some time. It was responsible
for the sudden rise of Huey Long; it was also responsible for
his sudden death. Where the reasoning faculties prevailed,
where hearts were right and heads were clear Huey Long
would never have become a dictator, and assassination would
not have been the medium adopted to check him. .
But rage and fear, paralyzes the cerebral processes on one
hand; change man from a thinking to a fighting animal on the
other.
So perhaps what the world needs is not so much a Moses,
as an A-l gland doctor.

As to Football Wages
T17E commend the candor of those three ex-Trojan football
stars Hibbs, Saunders and Shaver. They have decided
honesty 18 the best policy in intercollegiate athletics, now they
are out of them.
Instead of secretly subsidizing football material at the col
leges and universities, they would put the boys on a uniform
and living wage say $150 per month. This, they maintain,
would avoid the "taint of professionalism'1 (sic) and eliminate
extra curricular and hypocritical "jobs," such as "ringing the
chapel bell, mowing the dean's lawn, and washing down the
campus statuary once a week."

and pay them for service rendered carrying the ball over the
goal line for dear old Siwnsh! Considering the punishment they
take, such a wage would not be excessive.
We would have only one amendment to make, ie. : THE $1.V)
BE PAID ONLY TO THOSE FOOTBALL PLAYERS, WHO
ABE UNABLE TO PAY FOR THEIR OWN EDUCATION, and
who are not only football but COLLEGE material!
In other words we would compel the college authorities to
kick every man off the football squad who couldn't maintain
his college grades (and we mean maintain them), who hadn't
sufficient brains mixed with his brawn to give real promise of
needing and benefitting, from four years of higher education.
UNDER such circumstances we would see no objection to
the establishment of what might be termed athletic-scholastic
scholarships financial assistance to those who were good
students as well as good athletes, and without financial help
could not play college football, or have the benefit of a college
education.
Such a provision, properly administered, would do more to
encourage real scholarship and eliminate professionalism in col
lege athletics, than anything we can imagine.
It would not keep the worthy POOR boy out of college
athletics on one hand; and it WOULD keep out the bonehead
PRO merely using college as a preparatory school for the prize
ring, the grunt and groan circuit, or professional football nn
the other.
A consummation dovoutedly to be wished.
Kilt we fear Messrs. Hibbs, Saunders and Shaver would never
accept the amendment !

latan. No matter. I aay Jt and I

mulling over in my mind for ten
years. Especially when I have listen
ed to discussions In medical societies
and read the current views and opin
ions of recognized leaders In the pro
fession. In giving utterance to it
now I am not going off half-cocked.
I say what I think, and I am pre
pared to hear the answer, in this
as In any other subject touched on
here. I always give & gentlemanly
hearing to anything anyone cares to
&ay. law or professional, and I al
ways treat such letter or communi
cation as confidential. What 'a more,
nobody can question my record about
this. So I repeat, I'm prepared to
pay due respect to the sincere views
of any reader who may see the mat
ter In another light. My goodness,
my best medical friends know I can
take It, and Indeed it la duo largely
to their frank criticism ai well as
their "constructive" suggestions, that
this column is aw, you finish it
I'm blushing.
It la well enough that the repu
table, con&erratlve practitioner should
desire to be not the first by whom
the iipt' Is tried, nor jet thv la., to
lay the old aside, but It Is carrying
that traditional spirit too far whn
methods are censured not as bad but
new.
Scores of good doctors have Rsked
me why these modern methods are
not discussed In the foremost cur
rent medical publications If they arc
so valuable. That's precisely what I
am deploring in the present trend
of organized medicine. The ;oremost
medical Journals have for years not
only rejected good, honest, scientific
contributions dealing with these
newer methods, contributions from
physicians of excellent standing, but
have sometimes descended to well,
to the level of childish peevishness
in refusing to give this new knowl
edge to their readers. In fact, they
have censured and censored these
methods not as bsd but new. That
la why the Inarticulate rank and file
has not heard more about the new
methods. And no doubt that ex
plains the naive ideas many good dor
tors have about these methods.
Even the American Medical asso
ciation stoops to anonymity in dis
seminating propaganda against the
ambulant treatment of hernia quot
ing "well known" surgeons who evi
dently don't know what they're talk
ing about but not divulging the Iden
tity of these "authorities." To name
the "authorities" might spoil the ef
fect, for clearly they are ringers, pli
able old gentlemen who are easily
persuaded to secrete the particular
thought required In the exigency, pro
vided they are assured nobody will
ever know they did It.

PORTLAND, Ore., Sept. 12. (AP)
The controversy between parents In
four grade school districts and the
Portland school board was enlivened
today when the parents filed suit to
force the board to reopen the schools,
closed recently for reasons of econ
omy. In circuit court the board was or
dered to Bhow cause next Tuesday why
an Injunction against the closing
should not be Issued.
Most of the parents in the four
districts have refused to permit their
children to transfer to other schols,
arguing that the board's closing or
der was not Justified.
