For the first time In the history
of the Northwest Jackson County
Jatr, held annually at Oold Hill,
there will be cash prizes lor ex
hibits this . year. It has been an
nounced from that city. Previously
ribbons were the only awards made
but thla year S500 In cash la avail
able, taken from the parl-mutuel
races held this year for the first
time.
Entry day for the fair la to be
Friday. September 30. Entries will
close at a p.m., followed by arrang
ing snd Judging. There will be no
livestock exhibits other than the 4-H
club entries. Farm product are W
be stressed, with frulu. vegetables,
grains, flowers and cooking taking
the main interest. Needlework will
also be on exhibit, as will Industrial
displays by the Oold Hill Beaver
Cement company and the J. M.
Lively lime company. A mineral dis
play Is also expected to attract In
terest. Although there will be no Judging
or prizes awarded In that division,
there will be a curio and relic ex
titbit In the Oold H1U hotel, where
a Dart of the fair la to be held. The
main part of the fair will be in
the main floor of the city nan, in"
old school building In Oold Hill,
Three Oranges will vie for top
honors with prIM booths, for prem
lums of 136, SIS and (10. The three
competing will be the Sams Valley
Orange, the Live oak orange ana
the Rogue River district, and the
Oold Hill Orange.
The fair will open on Saturday,
September 31, at 10 a.m., with a big
parade, In ,hlch there will be many
float, lodge entries, Orange entries
and Individual marchers displaying
their Ideaa of what composes a good
costume. In this division, as well as
in aeveral others, handsome mer
chandise prlres will be awarded.
The fun part of the program will
be furnished by varloua contests, In
cluding freak races, regular foot
races, a tire changing contest and
a rolling pin heaving race. A pet
parade for the kids and a contest
for Individual costumes la also aroua
lng Interest. i
In the afternoon the Medford
Rogues will meet the Oold Hill town
team to aatlsfy any lust for athletic
action left over from the races ol
the morning. At 0 p. m. and lasting
until B, there 111 be a free barbecue,
followed by a big dance. The orches
tra to play for the affair haa not
jet been announced.

Canadian cattle country. Both young
men have placed high in rodeos
throughout the country.

of Leth bridge, la a Canadian cham
pion ln the bareback riding division.
He his won honors In- Fort Worth,
New York, Chicago, Vancouver and

SALMON CANNERIES
EXPECT HEAVY RUN
ASTORIA, Ore., Sept. 12. (AP)
Canneries were prepared for an ex
ceptionally heavy run of salmon at
receiving stations today as boats came
into the river after the first night of
fishing in the fall commercial sea
son. Hundreds of fishermen went out
las. night after having reached an
agreement with packers on the con
troversial price question. For several
days there have been reports of
very large run of aalmon.

Taxes on vice as part of a new reve- :
nue program were proposed to the
city council last night by former
Councilman V. C. Webster.
He Included a long list of vice and
nuisances to Increase municipal funds.
Among proposals was a charge of 10
per month against Inmates of vice
houses for health examinations, and
a plan to arrest and fine proprietors
of gambling establishments monthly.
