Saturday afternoon, August 81. Major
Dooltttle, who U the aviation sales
manager of Shell Petroleum corpora
tion, St. Louis, Is making the flight
In the "8hellightntug." a Lockheed,
low-wing cabin plane, which Is the
new high altitude plane of the Shell
Petroleum corporation. The flight Is
being made for the purpose of testing
out Shell's new 100-octane aviation
fuel and lubricating oils. This new
Shell aviation gasoline Is produced
for use In the fighting planes of the
United States army and commercial
aviation. For many years Shell has
led the field In manufacturing avia
tion fuels and Is the first company to
Manufacture and distribute, In com
mercial quantities, this outstanding
aviation gasoline. At preeent the
company Is supplying this fuel to
the bombardment group of the U. S.
army air corps at Hamilton Field,
near Ban Francisco, Cal.
The "Shelllghtning," especially built
for Doollttle, was at one time the
speediest passenger plane in the
world, being equipped with 700
horsepower Wright Cyclone engine.
Model F, which developed a cruising
speed of over 300 miles per hour. The
"Shelllghtning" hns now been rebuilt,
reconditioned and has had the- most
modern airplane engine In the world
Installed, a Wright Cyclone, Model O,
generating more than 000 horsepower
and la equipped with a powerful
supercharger for high altttude flying.
The fuselage of the ship has been
redesigned and the cabin partially
sealed for altitude flying, Doollttle
will ordinarily fly the plane at an
nltltude of between 18.000 and 36,000
feet.
In line with modern construction,
the shape of the 'ShelliKhtnlng's'
body haa been chanced to Improve
streamlining. It has also been
strengthened to withstand the ter
rific strain caused by the more pow
erful engine and air currents in fly
ing at more than 3fl0 miles per hour.

One of the outstanding cars of all
Europe Is the Austro Daimler "Berg
meister." It ranks with the best
cars produced In the world and has
proven lta ability to hold Its own
with the best for many years. It la
built near the Alps and la tested In
them so one may know that there Is
little doubt It will scale any moun
tain road with ease and speed. The
name "Bcrgmelster" means "Master
of the Mountains" and it was a name
well chosen, for this car has won and
held numerous racing and mountain
climbing event throughout the
world. Following la an interesting
quotation about this car: "It waa

mou tains) in strongly contested
sporting events, that Hans van
Pluck's skillful handling of his Aus
tro Daimler broke every record. On
the occasion of a single flying visit
to England the same sportsman won
the blue ribbon of English hill climbs.

six-cylinder engine which develops
130 horsepower and which la also
equipped with two high efficiency
carburetors for maximum speed and
power. Other features are forced
feed lubrication, centrifugal water
pump and tubular frame. The car
has a wheelbase of 11 feet 6 Inches
and an over-all-height of only 5 feet
3 inches. Numerous body models and
designs are obtainable for this car.
This la possible because the company
prefers to have lta cars distinctive
and exclusive with their owners than
to have mass production. With this
practice practically every owner has
a car that Is different from anyone
elses. Some of the body models are
very striking with their chromium
lines and embellishments. They build
a streamlined sedan or limousine, too.

formed lines. The rear of the car
alopes gracefully down to the bumper
and should be Important In reducing
wind resistance. Even though all this
la true, they still lack the floating
lines of American cars. In Exirope
they don't seem to be able to get the
front of the car streamlined. They
Invariably have a lot of rods and
wires sticking around and often they
have the old-fashioned flat radiator
shell. However, during the past year
or two. the designs have Improved
considerably. Some companies are
putting out really modern body de
signs, but for the most part tha
manufacturers stick to the older con
ventional style.
