down from a high tower. About
halfway down a parachute opens
and bears them gently to the
ground. Tho parachute Is attached
to a sustaining rope so there Is no
danger. After buckling people into
the harness an attendant shoves oil
the platform tho who have loM
their nerve at the last moment.

planes is becoming a major sport
in Russia. Tens of thousands have
made Jumps. I snw 86 men and
girls make a mass Jump at the
Moscow air field.
But parachute Jumping has other
objects than sport. A military man
told me undoubtedly there are mili
tary aspects in tho government' en
couragement of parachuting, "in
ease of war,' he said, "think what
a party of a hundred men, eacn
with a portable machine gun, drop
ped at night on an enemy flank
or on their lines of communication,

Another unusual amusement In
the park Is called the "Crab." The
fun-seeker straddles a small car
riage at the bottom of a short,
ateep Incline. On the Incline arc
holes every foot or so. The rider
Is provided with an Iron hook. The
object la to pull yourself to the
top by Jerks by hooking successive
holes before the en rr Inge runs back
down the Incline. It requles fast,
accurate hooking to drag oneself to
the top. If you get near the top ol
the Incline and uitu a stab at the
sole, you'll get a tremendous thump
at the baso of the spine as the
car runs back and hits the bumper.
