The much ballyhooed court tusslfl be
tween modest farmer Will Sear lea and
his brazen nudist neighbors flopped
tcdoy to the great disappointment of
a thousand rustics and summer visit
ors. Tha burning Issue of whether
Searlea can peclc over his couth pas
ture fence at naked men and women
at play still was unsettled. And the
date and place of the next round In
the nudist's battle to wear their
birthday suits without rubberneck In
terference was as little understood as
Einstein's theory of relativity.
The onrey gentlemen of the press
reinforced by sob sisters and photog
raphers, were the cause of It all. The
bashful, blushing nudists, although
fully clothed for the scheduled trial
of the farmer for Insulting them
acrose his fence. Insisted the pre.w
and public being barred from the
proceedings.
Court Cleared
Justice of the Peace Lewis (Jedge
Luke) Hcyler, In customary garb of
shirtsleeves, suspenders and wrinkled
pants, therefore ordered from the vol
unteer firemen's clubroom, his tem
porary courtroom, all except the prin
cipals, witnesses and lawyers.
The score of nudists present, mem
bers of the Central Health Institute,
smiled In relief. But they reckoned

He tartly Informed Judge Luke that
If firemen couldn t stay in tuelr own
clubroom, the Justice end all his
troop could get out.
Judge Luke adjourned court to a
little room behind the fire engines
and prepared to proceed when the
doughty mayor delivered a flat ulti
matum thot the public would be ad
mitted to the trial or there wouldn't
be any trial.
With the quavering. bewlUlered an
nouncement that he didn't know
when or where the hearing would be
resumed, the Justice capitulated,
Too Hot for Nn (lists
Then things got hot for the nud
ists. The rlbnld crowd caught the au
natural advocates like treed possums,
laughing and hurling vague Insults
as it closed In.
The nudists huddled together, cov
ering their faces with newspapers.
Finally police opened a lane through
the crowd nnd Leslie Bain, owner of
the nudist camp, and his bashful cli
ents dnshed across the street to the
sanctuary of their attorney's office,
T ain't got nothln' to conceal. I'll
flpht this thing till hell freezes over
and then I'll be flghtln' on the Ice.
Why those people were hartRln' over
my fenoe with their bare naked bod
ies." Judge Unimpressed
Judge Luke, who refused to put on
his Sunday suit In spit of the fact
he was awakened today by airplanes
buzzing over his hoiio. bearing city
photographers to take his picture and
reporters to hang on his every word,
opined that all the commotion would
result In New Jersey laws banning
nudists, similar to those In New
York.
"But for the present there's noth
ing In New Jersey laws to keep men
and women from going naked on
their own land," he eald.

tagging proudly behind him, repeated
an invitation to all who wanted to
come to attend a clam bake and peek
ing party at his farm next Sunday,
with an unobstructed view of the
nudists' camp guaranteed all free.
