BALKM, Aug. 30. (Authoriza
tion to apply for federal funds for
the construction, reconstruction and
improvement of Oregon armories at
a, cost of $750,000, was given Major
General George A. White, in & resolu
tion adopted Thursday by the atate
board of control.
The resolution urged direct grant
of the funds, which would be obtain
ed either through the works progress
or the public works administration.
New armories would be constructed
at Baker. La Grande. Pendleton. The
Dalles, Astoria. St. Helens. Lebanon.
Spri ngf leld . Oregon City. Forest
Grove. Salem. Hillsboro. Grcsham and
Corvallls.
The proposed new building at Sa
lem would cost 200.000 and include
an auditorium.
Reconstruction and Improvement
projects were proposed at Woodburn.
Sltverton. Albany. Ashland, McMinn
villc, Med ford, Roscburg and Mnrsh-field.

mal this fall. Judging from advance
applications, the registrar's office re
ported today.
Latest statistics on admission show
more than 60 per cent .'.ncreaso in
applications accepted thn on the
corresponding date a year ago. Some
of this may be due to earlier sub--mlsslon
of credentials, officials said.
Heavy Increase in graduate stu
dents and in transfers from other
colleges was shown in the advance
figures.

day announced the engagement of
his third son, Prince Henry, Duke
of Gloucester, 35, to Lady Alice
Christabel Montagu - Douglas - Scott.
34, a direct descendant of Sir Walter
Scott.
Prince Henry's marriage will leave
the Prince of Wales, heir to the
throne, the only unmarried child of
the British sovereigns.
"It is with great pleasure the king
and queen announce tha bethrothal
of our dearly beloved son. the Duke
of Gloucester, and Lady Alice Christ
obel Montagu-Douglas-Scott, to which
union the king has gladly given his
consent," the court circular announc
ing the event read.
The prince's fiance Is a petite,
blue eyed brunette with a peaches
and cream complexion and Is a smart
dresser. She is fond of sports, par
ticularly horseback riding, which is
the prince's favorite sport.
The prince his full name Is Henry
William Frederick Albert easily Is
the best athlete in the British royal
family. A younger son, he has lived
the rather dull life of a British army
officer, enlivened only by sports and
travel.

meeting of the Chamber of Com-
merce and Progressive Business Men's

NEGRO KILLER PAYS i
IN ELECTRIC CHAIR!
HTJNTSVILLE, Tex., Friday, Aug.
30. (UP) Ben Boyd, negro killer
whose life was prolonged for a month
by a governor's nightmare, went to
his death in the electric chair early
today.
Boyd was executed at the state
penitentiary at 12:12 a. m. for the
murder of Robert Golightly, restau
rant keeper at Wharton, stabbed to
death several months ago. Boyd, who
was engaged In a fight with two
other white men, suddenly broke
away from them and attacked Gol
ightly, a bystander.

Mrs. Hftttle A. Koozer, mother ol
j away August 29 at the home of her
'daughter, Mrs, W. S. Edwards, in
Milton-Frcewater, Oregon. Hnttle A-
Bond was born In Wisconsin In 1850
and was united In marriage to A. P.
Koozcr in Iowa, in the middle 70's.
They came west, first to Portland.
Inter settling in Lake county In 1884,
where her husband died in 1917.
Besides her daughter, with whom
Mrs. Kooaer had made her home
since the passing of her husband,
deceased is survived by Ralph E.
Koozer, a younger sister In Iowa, an
older brother In Santa Crust, Cal.,
several grandchildren and seven
great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at
Mil ton -Free water Saturday afternoon.
