for All Over 50 Gains

CALGARY. Alberta, Aug. 23. (AP)
The Social Credit League, advocat
ing pensions of $25 a month for
everyone over 50 who Is a bona fide
citizen of Alberta, was swept into po
litical power today on a mounting
wave of votes.
- invading provincial politics for the
first time In yesterday's election, the
league won 30 seats In the country
ridings and held the lead for 28 oth
ers as the proportional representa
tion count proceeded In the cities.
There wese 63 seats to be filled.
The last standing showed: Social
credit elected, 30; liberals elected, 1;
Social credit leading, 28; liberals
leading. 2; united farmers leading,
1; conservative leading, 1.
William Aberhart. the 67-year-old
Calgary evangelist who founded the
league, undoubtedly will be Alberta's
next premier, succeeding Premier R.
R. Reld of the United Farmers of Al
berta party, which went down to over-
whelming deicat.
Surrounded by members of the So
cial Credit league In Calgary, Aber
hart received the election returns at
the Prophetic Bible institute he
founded some years ago. It was there
he organized the league.
A member of the Social Credit
league winning a seat will resign and
a by-election will be held to place
Aberhart as premier.
While Aberhart was being congrat
ulated by his supporters. Premier
Reld of Edmonton conceded his per
sonal defeat in his own riding of Ver
million which gave him 868 votes
compared with 2,454 for W. A. Fallow,
Social Credit; 1.084 for A. Hunter,
liberal; 725 for W. Hallna, commun
ist, and 237 for A. E. Williams, con
servative. In an early morning address to his
followers, Aberhart said:
"I feel our opponents failed be
cause they were fighting against the
greatest economic movement that has
ever been seen."
He described the election as a

1885 and held the same honor 50
years later when the city observed
the 150th anniversary of Its settle

FREE PRISONERS
On a tour of southern Oregon
counties, for the purpose of confer
ring with law enforcement officers,
E. R. Duffey of Salem, state parole
officer, spent today in the city con
ferring with Sheriff Syd I. Brown,
and District Attorney George A. Cod
ding, on parole granting policies and
official business.
The state parole officer confirmed
the report that Gordon L. Schermer
horn. former sheriff of Jackson coun
ty, serving three years In state prison
for ballot-theft had been denied a
parole, at the last parole board meet
ing. It was through the efforts of Duf
fey that the contract between h. A.
Banks, former Jackson county agi
tator serving a life term for mur
der, and Former State Pan tie Officer
Dan Kellaher was brought to light.
By the terms of the contract. Banks
allegedly was to pay Kellaher S50.
000 for freedom.
"It la the duty of all law-abiding
citizens to bock up their law enforce
ment agencies and officials In curb
ing crime and criminals," Duffey said.
"The governor Is backing up the
courts, 'insisting that mer convicted
of crimes, be denied easy paroles, &
a protection to society.
"I am in favor of law enforcement
officials being divorced from politics,
and being elected or appointed for
long terms, with removal only for
cause. This would Insure more effi
ciency and protection from crime and
criminals."
Mr, Duffey cited federal court
Judges as examples. He also discussed
a number of cases, wherein "moudlin
sympathizers have sought paroles for

I with long prison records."
He said that the governor had de
nied these pleas with dynamic words,
insisting "it makes no difference how
much money they have, or how good
looking they are. they must pay for
their misdeeds, and tha courts must
be sustained."
