SALEM. Ore., Aug. 15. (AP) Gov
ernor Charles H. Martin, returning
here from a short vacation trip to
Bremerton, said Wewnesday he was In
favor of the state's acquisition of the
Willamette campus or adjoining prop
erty for an adequate capltol grounds,
as this was the time the city of Sa
lem and the state should make a
"real civic center" out of the present
location of the capltol, the federal
building and the Marlon county court
house.
' New P. O. Spurs Talk
Word from Washington that Salem
was allocated funds for a new federal
building and postofflce spurred the
governor to express his views regard
ing a "perfect and timely situation"
to do some civic sork. "What we
must depend upon, however. Is a cltl
lenry with vision Into the future,"
he added.
Martin declared that with addi
tional grounds, particularly the Wil
lamette campus, the state could make
a fine capltol location. The new fed
eral building would aid. and with
reports of a new court house the en
tire district In which the three gov
ernmental structures would be locat
ed would make a fine civic center, he
said.
Board Studies Site
The state has proposed a 93.500,000
capltol building to replace the old
structure destroyed by fire April 25.
A 45 per cent grant from the federal
government has been requested and
compliance has been assured by Sen
ator Charles H. McNary. The matter j
oi acquiring tae Willamette campus
at a cost between $600,000 and Sl
000,000 Is before a Joint committee
of the board of control and the
board of trustees of the university.
The governor did not Indicate
when he would call the special ses
sion of the legislature, but It was be
lieved It would not be before the first
of October.

Prospects of ready markets and satis

pioneers would receive prices consid

planned for the development will pre
vent financial failures suffered by
many former Alaska, homesteaders.

ket ranging from H.50 to 2 at Chi
cago, depending on grade. Irwin said.
Fresh vegetables of which there ap
peared little probability of a surplus
this year could be sold for nearly
double their price In Seattle. String
beans, eagerly accepted by restau
rants, brought around 7 cents a pound
at Anchorage at the same time they
sold for 3 to 4 cent wholesale In
Seattle.

The Oregon offtca has recommend
ed to Washington 319 projects calling
for expenditure of about 91.600.000
Administrator E. J. Orifflth said to
day. The endorsed projects would
provide an estimated 32,000 "man
years" of labor.
"I noticed In the paper that the
first allocation for Oregon WPA pro
jects was made yesterday." Griffith
said. "However, I have not been ad
vised yet which projects were ap-1
proved.
"At least double the number of
projects recommended by the Oregon
office have been submitted or sug
grsted and are being considered. Most
of the WPA projects are limited to
?2V000, but some are for more.
"We make no announcement as to
which applications are reconmmend
ed to Washington." Griffith stated
"The applicant Is notified, and may
make announcement if he desires
Announcement will be made when
funds are allocated for projects."
