Common frankness requires that the

THRILL ON FIRST
STEAMER TRAVEL
By Irwin Doty
VANCOUVER, B. C. Aug. 11
(Spl.) After experiencing the breath
taking ride on the "Dipper" at Jant
zen Beach, the Scouts of Crater Lake
council could hardly settle down to
the long train ride to Seattle.
The boys boarded the train at Port
land at 4:30 p.m. Just out of Port
land the train had to stop and wait
for the section of a draw-bridge to
swing back Into position. The draw,
bridge had been raised to let a boat
pass down the river.
One of the sights which the Scouts
will remember from this day of travel
Is the sight of the Columbia river
from the railroad bridge. As one looks
up the broad expanse of water and
sees a short distance away the Inter
state bridge with 13 archa and all th.
water, he can't help but remember It.
Because In a short time each Scout
will get to see Uie very head-waters
of the Columbia river In the Cana
dian Rockies.
After the train had passed Into
Washington and had proceeded qulta
a distance, the boys finally quieted
down and began to enjoy themselves.
Dinner was served at 7:00 p.m. to
the Scouts. It was one of th finest
meals that could be served.
The group arrived at Seattle at
10:00 p.m. and rode a street car to
the Gowman hotel.
Jangling of the telephone awok
the boys with a Jump next morning.
Following breakfast all the Scouts
marched to the steamship station
and got aboard the steamship "Prin
cess Kathleen." This was a thrill to
most of the group, because msny of
them had never been on a boat be
fore. The boat sailed at 8:00 a.m. out
Into the Puget sound and headed for
Vancouver. B.C.
The "Princess Kathloen" wound
through the many Islands of Puget
Bound and finally came to a stop at
Victoria. This was at 12:00. It stayed
there for 46 minutes, then backed
away from the dock and started on
the rest of the Journey to Vancouver.
Ail Scouts took many plotures of
freighters which came near tha
"Princess Kathleen." Also a lot of
spare time was spent by the boys In
writing letters home.
At 1 :00 p.m. the Scouts went to tha
dining ball for lunch. This was an
excellent meal topped off by a pleca
of apple pie with a dipper of lc
cream on top.
Close to half-way between Victoria
and Vancouver are the straits of
Oeorgla. These are narrow straits
which wind In and out among tha
Islands. This stretch of water wa
quits narrow and the steamer had to
pass through at a slow speed. After
leaving the straits of Georgia, tha
boat passed out Into the Puget
sound onto a stretch about 40 miles
In length.
After the boat had passed this
stretch of water anrj landed at Van.
couver. the boys got off tha boat t
see the Canadian city.
