GRANTS PASS, Ore.. Aug. 5 (Spl
Abner Blss, 02, was Instantly killed
Saturday when his body vu mangled
by a caterpillar logging tractor oper
atod by M. J. McShane In the Shan
creek district.
Coroner Virgil Hull aald Bias, Mc
Shane, and a man named Jew were
riding th tractor Into the wooda to
begin the day'a work. It was between
7:20 and 7:25 a. m. With McShane at
the controls, Bias riding on the left
gas tank and Jena waa riding on the
other tank.
They had Juat reached the top of a
atep hill, up which It had been
necessary to back the machine o It
would not tip over backwards. Thla
procedure waa usual. McShane, In
backing up the hill had been looking
backward over his shoulder to keep
hla direction. At the top he slowed
down considerably so that one of the
men could hook a chain onto the
tractor.
Glancing to the front at that point,
he aaw Bins body, protruding from
between tlio track and a bar, Mc
Shane told Hull. Bias' right arm,
ahoulder, and chest were crushed and
part of hla head was cut away In the
accident. He had obvloualy been
drawn by the revolving caterpillar
tracks under a bar that supported the
left gas tank.
There was no way to tell whether
Bias had fallen off, had Jumped off
and slipped Into the machine, or had
fainted, Hull said.
Surviving him are his wife, Mamie
Ethel, two sons and two daughters.

FAMILY DIE IN CRASH

Three members of a Portland, Ore-
family were killed near here today
when their automobile crashed Into
a power Una pole and burst Into
flames.
They were Harvey Gatchet, 36. his
36-year-old wife and their five-year-old
daughter, Barbara.
All were membera of a vaudeville
troupe, and were en route to Greens
boro from Henderson, where they had
given a midnight performance.
