Chicago Wheat
PORTLAND, Aug. 2. (AP) There
were no chances in buttr and but
terfat prices today.
There was a real shortage of fresh
eggs In the local trade but since the
change In the law so that the stock
cannot be called fresh, the trade Is
besieged with storage stuff mixed
with current lay, much to the dissat
isfaction of consumers.
Tillamook reported ft strong and
higher market for cheese during the
day and notified the trade of a rise
of lc for both triplets and loaf at
17-18c lb. there which means 19-20C
lb. to Portland retailers.
With prices unchanged generally, a
rather quiet trading tone was show
ing for live chickens here. Prices con
tinued much the same as a week ago.
Active trading tone was showing
for tomatoes with a gradual clean-up
CHICAGO, Aug. 2 & Heavy sell
ing dominated the Chicago wheat
market much of the time today. ?.nd
prices suffered sharp breaks, espec
ially in the late dealings.

IN YEARS, CLAIM
NEW YORK. Aug. 3. (API The
slow change in the color of figures
In the profit and loss column of cor
porations from a bright red to a light
gray has focused the attention of fl
nancinn authorities on current earn
ings reports.
By and large, American business
institutions are climbing higher out
or the depression and are showing
more favorable net profit reports,
but analyst stress that the road
ahead up the hill is longer than the
portion already traveled.
During April. May and June of this
year. Industrial corporations In the
aggregate moved higher than the
profit level of last year at this time,
but the gain for the two periods whs
less than the first quarter of this
year over the first quarter of last.
Financial experts point out thAt
the second quarter of 1P34 was the
high potnt of the year, but the third
quarter earnings showed the worst
comparison of that year.
Industry now is facing the bright
est outlook of the current year for
the third quarter, and the compari
son with last year should be highly
favorable, it Is predicted In some fin
ancial sections.
In commenting on the current
earnings situation, the National City
Bank of New York tn its monthly
letter declared :
"Even with the Improvement indi
cated for the current year, the result
for teh six years 1930-35 combined for
alt manufacturing corporations in the
United States, numbering about 90.
000, will be no net return whatever
on invested capital. "
A compilation by the bank on the
profits for the first half of this year
made by 260 industrial corporations
showed a raise of 17.9 per cent over
the 1934 first half.
