which the Book of Mormon was
translated.
Colton announced that Heber J.

"Only New Ouiana, Borneo and

miles," saya a bulletin from the

the National Geographlcsoclety. "La

"A high, barren plateau, edged with
cliffs, rises in the central part of
the island. Towering above the pla
teau are huge mountain masses. Th3
largest Is the ancient, extinct volcano
Ankaratra, one of whose peaks Is
named 'That Which the Mists Can
not Climb.' The highest point in the
Island Is Amboro. which has en ele
vation of 9.490 feet.
"Low, steaming plains circle the
highlands and slope to the sea. On
the east coast they form a narrow,
marshy strip that follows the straight,
unbroken shoreline. A string of la
goons and coral reefs protect the
few harbors from the dangerous siirf
of the Indian Ocean. One of the
projects of the new public works pro
gram is a deep-water harbor on the
east coast at Monakara, which until
a few years ago was an insignificant
native village. A railroad is beinj
built to connect It with the town of
Flanarantsoa In the Interior, and
nearby swamps are being drained for
rice and coffee plantations.

"Besides rice and coffee, Madagas
car produces vanilla, cocoa, spices,
rubber, sugar, millet, maize, cotton
and tobacco, as well as cattle, pL?s,
sheep and goats. But rice Is the
staple crop. Two pounds of rice n
day are only ordinary rations for !

methods are still primitive. The laud

spades. Then oxen tread the soft
mud to harrow it.
"The northwest coast, where the
mountains often reach into the aeri,
Is deeply Indented." The port. Dlego-
Suarez, has one of the finest natural
harbors in the world. It was the first
port annexed by the French, and
serves as a naval base and chief com
mercial port of the Island.
"The coastal plains are much wider
on the west than on the east. Th: j
rivers too "are longer and several, are I
navigable for some 'distance Inland, j

"Modern transportation Is finally
displacing the awkward filanzana,
once the principal means of travel
In Madagascar. The filanzana Is not
a particularly comfortable convey
ance, n is a sort of ichair or ham
mock slung between two poles, end
carried by four porters who are us
ually of assorted sizes. Eight men
accompany each chair, so that the
bearers can change every five min
utes. "There Is a geological theory ftiat
Madagascar was once part of a lare
continent reaching as far as India.
Volcanic activity accompanying the
sinking of this continent might ex
plain the lava covering the Ankarata
mountains, and the numerous hot
springs that make such resorts as
Antflrabe famous. This vanished
and hypothetical continent has been
chrlAtened Lemur ta from the 37
species of lumurs still to be found
on Madagascar. Lemur, which means
'ghost' in Malagasq, is the native
name for these little oat-like crea
tures with round, staring eyes that
shine in the dark.
"The native tribes ((Malagasy) are
not related In any way to African
races, but seem to be derived from
Melaneslan and Mayalo-Polynesian
stock. How they ever reached Mada
gascar Is a mystery. Arab traders of
the ninth century and African slaves
brought over from the mainland wtre
the only foreign elements until the
sixteenth century when a Portuguese.
Dlojjo Diaz, 'discovered' the island.
Despite frequent attempts of the
Dutch and French to gain a foot
hold, the native government kept Its
power and Independence until 1804
Then the French Invaded the island,
and declared it a French colony.
"Madagascar's climate varies ac
cording to altitude. The coastal lands
are hot and unhealthy, but towns on
the high plateau have cool air and
moderate temperatures. The country
m the extreme south Is semi -arid and
rather like the American southwest
"Vegetation agrees with the cli
mate. Thick forests follow the coast
line. Mahogany, ebony, rosewood and
sandalwood that lured Arab traders:
rnfla palm, beef wood, tamarind, man
go and Madagascar spices grow luxuriantly."
