PORTLAND, Ore., July 3. (AP)
Four hundred more men returned to
their Jobs In the Long-Bell and
Weyerhaeuser lumber operation at
Longvlew. Wash., today M the Pacific
northwest strike slowly gave way to
union agreements and non-union re
openlngs. Nearly 1000 workers were on their
Jobs at Longvlew. about 60 per cent of
the mills' normal crews.
The situation elsewhere was little
changed.
In Seattle, sawmills and most wood
working plants were atill closed.
In Tacoma. 1200 men, without
agreement, were at work In 14 plants,
with national guardsmen and state
police atill In control.
In Portland, the Inman-Poulsen
company which agreed to a four-point
plan Involving higher wages, a limita
tion of hours, collective ' bargaining
and a pledge of no discrimination
(but not complete union recognition
or closed shop) continued to operate
with a full crew of 335. Pour other
mllla with which no union agreement
has been signed also were operating,
but only one at full speed.
The only disturbance today occur
red at Aberdeen, Wash., where tear
gaa bombs, hurled by state police,
dispersed 400 pickets after tacks had
been found along the road to a mill
operating without union sanction, A
woman suffered a cut leg when she
fell while fleeing the fumes. About
100 men and women were working In
two non-union plants.

ern senators emarged from a confer
ence with President Roosevelt today
reporting they had been virtually as
sured a $113,000,000 Irrigation and
reclamation program would be car
ried out with work relief funds.
Eleven senators, heded by Senator
Wheeler (D Mont.), appealed to the
president for allocation of funds for
the full $113,003,000 program recom- ,
mended by Dr. El wood Meade, recta- '
mation cut utilise! oner.
"We have every reason to believe
the full program will be carried out,"
said Senator O'Mahoney (D.. Wyo.) !
after the conference. "This goes hand
In hand with the government's pro
gram for the purchase of submarglnal
land."
O'Mahoney said the reclamation did
not mean land to be put into culti
vation would go into competition
with eastern farmers because crops
grown In irrigated land are usually
not wheat nor other competitive pro

VAN VALZAH ELECTED
In a short business .meeting of the
Southern Oregon Dental society last
night the following officers were
elected for the ensuing year: Presi
dent, Dr. Robert VanValzah; vice
president, Dr. Charles P. Johnson;
secretary-treasurer. Dr. Frederick H.
Johnson. It was voted to postpone
further meetings during the sum
mer until next September.

liquor.
The kitchen of her home Is In
adjoining Woodlynne and authori
ties there have shown no deposi
tion to interfere with her liquor
business.
But one day she sold some
drinks in the parlor and that
was a mistake because the parlor
Is in Collingswood and Colllngs
wood Is dry.
So Judge Prank Neutze sen
tenced her to 30 days In Jail.
"I Just got mixed up," she explained.

sicians today puzzled over a rare ail
ment that has made Rodney Brown
virtually a man while he Is only 6
years old.
The boy was brought to a hospital
from his home in Anderson county
last Saturday after becoming seri
ously ill.
Although only 6 ..years old. he is de
veloped like a boy 14 or 15. He is as
large as a 14-year-old lad, has the
voice of a man, has well developed
muscles and in other respects appears
more than twice as old as he is. Men
tally, he also has developed In ad
vance of his age.
"His condition Is caused by a dis
ease of the pltltuary gland." Dr. A. A.
Speegle of Palestine believes. "It is
the same condition that prodxices
giants."
The ailment, however, resulted laM
week in serious illness. The child
suddenly complained of a severe head
ache. Since then he has been In se
vere pain much of the time and It
has been necessary to give him medi
cine to ease the pain.
Dr. C. C. Nash, who Is treating the
child at a hospital hctv, said today
that a definite diagnosis of the trou
ble had not yet been mode. The case
Is "extremely rare," Dr. Nash said.
