Southern California's powerful track
and flld team won the 1033 national
eolleglate A. A. team championship
today but a lithe, brown negro youth
from Ohio atate, Jesse Owens, won
the thunderous applause of 1 8,000
fans.
In the most amazing list of Indi
vidual performances ever witnessed
In the far west, Owens took first
places In the 100 and 200-yard dashes,
the 220-yard low hurdles and the
broad Jump. His effort alone ac
counted for 40 of the 40 1-8 points
arored by Ohio State to talcc second
place to Southern California.
Surviving members of the 23 -man
Trojan team, after yesterday's trials,
rolled tip a total of 75 1-30 points,
accounted for largely through secon
dary strength. The Trojans only won
two first places.
But while Southern California was
adding the N. C. A. A. title to Its
previously won Intercollegiate A. A.
A. A. honors of a few weeks ago.

ahead of Anderson with Herman Neu
gaas of Tulane finishing In third
place. Each time Owens led from
til start. Slowness of the tlmea was
attributed to a 10-mlle wind that
blew Into the runners.
Owens' biggest test came todav In
the 220-yard low hurdles where he
faced the defending champion. Olenn
Hardin of Ioulalana State. It turned
out to be a romp for the negro lad.
Owena led after the half way mark
and was clocked In 23.4 seconds.
The victory climaxed Owens four
vay victory. He clinched the broad
Jump yesterday In the trials with a
leap of 28 feet 1 Inches. His nearest
rival. Al Olson of Southern Califor
nia. Jumped 25 feet 8 inches today
for the second position.
