CAMP MURRAY, Wash., June 16
(Special Correspondence) Today,
Sunday, the camp la more or less
deserted, with the boya tn town on
week-end leave. Seattle. Tacoma, and
Oiympla are points where most ol ,
the boys "hit" out for, and most
of them will come dragging in late
tonight ready to enter the second
week of Intensive training.
Tomorrow morning the camp win
arise a half hour earlier than usual ,
in order to prepare for the annual
brigade Inspection, which will take ;
most of the morning. With this out !
of the way the troops from the en- j
tire camp will be moved out Into j
the wooded areas east of camp in !
preparation for the big divisional ,
maneuver which takes place the lat
ter part of the week. I
Company A has been the proud
possessor of the battalion pennant !
for the best mess hall since the start !
of camp. This pennant Is awarded i
each day by the inspectors and Is
much sought after. The company in
the battaUon. receiving this award
the most times Is, at the end of
camp, awarded the regimental pen
nant and from present Indications
Company A stands a very good
chance of capturing this much cov
eted honor.
William E. Gllmore was promoted:
to second cook after arrival in camp,
with rank of private first class, and
he Is filling his new position with
much credit to himself and the com
pany. The boys of Company A and Head
quarters company are all In fine
health none are on the alck list
and from present Indications and
unless the unforseen happens it
doesn't look aa though ny of the
boya will be on the "inactive" list.
Mount Rainier looms up majesti
cally to the east and although It is
some 60 miles away It appears as
though It were only a short distance
from camp. Many of the boya would
like to take a trip to Rainier Na
tional park, but ti.e intensive drill
schedule being carried out at this
year's camp will not permit any
leaves long enough to make the trip

STATE PAYROLLS MAY
BE FORCED TO QUIT
. SALEM, June 20 (AP) Should
state departments and heads of In
stitutions put Into effect a recom
mendation of the budgetary control
office, about 75 married people,
mostly women, will be dismissed
from state employment after July, it
became known here today.
The budget office will recommend
to department heads and superin
tendents of Institutions that any
woman, whose husband is making an
equitable salary In some other de
partment or in private or commercial
business, be replaced.
In cases of institutions, where It
Is advantogeous to employ married
couples, the ruling will not be ap
plied, but In state departments it
will apply to all persons, whether
one or both are working for the gov
ernment. The budgetary control officials,
however, are only making the recom
mendation, but It was believed U
would be made effective. The sug
gestion will be Included in the re
port to be submitted within a few
days on the standardization of sal
aries. It was estimated the ruling would
affect from 50 to 75 persons.

OF HEART AILMENT

Harry Purrler. highly esteemed citi
zen of this valley, was found dead
June 13 by his wife, Adele Purrler.
upon her return In the evening from
the logging camp, where she had gone
to see her son, James Purrler, on
business.
A day or two before, Mr. Purrler
had complained of a pain In his
heart and when Mrs. Purrler was leav
ing at 3 p. m. he complained of be
ing tired and asked her if she would
be at home tn time to get supper, to
which question she replied In the
affirmative.
Upon her return, she found htm ly
ing on the bed with an open maga
zine by his hand which he had evi
dently been reading as he rested.
Mr. Purrler had been working too
hard this reason, doing a double
amount of caring for two farms, and
evidently overtaxed his strength.
He was a member of Enterprise
Orange and his presence waa always
welcomed because of his genial dis
position and willingness to appear
upon any proeram at short notice, as
he hsd a fund of recitations alwrys
refldv.
The eldest daughter. Mrs. Lee HUHs.
waa in Burbank. Cal.. having cone
there to drive her grandmother. Mrs
Bitt?rfiPld-s car back to Wlmer as
Mrs. Butterfteld spends her summers
with the Purrler family.
The body was taken to Orants Past,
funeral parlors June 14. where friends
could call, after which the family
proceeded to Burbank. Cal.. which was
also Mr. Purriers home before com
ing to Oregon, and where he was
burled among his people.
Mrs. Hlllis and crandmother and
Mr. Purrier's relatives were notified
to remain in Burbank. where the fun
eral as held.
