"The imaj?e that is focuased on the
retina of the eye is about 120th of
aji Inch high. The eye makes about
72.000 fixations or "looks" per day
say S.0O0 an hour. The eyes must not
only focus but converge (that is, dt

where reading. Inspecting, sewing or
any other occupation that requires
the work to be seen near a,t hand,
this act of convergence is a terrific
nervous and muscular effort. In
fact. It is the effort to see and not
the seeing Itself that causes so much
physicsl discomfort headache, irrita

ness. "It Is In this field that modern op
tometry has done remarkable work.

LONDON. ( June 14. (AP) Helen
Wills Moody suffered the first defeat
of her tennis comeback campaign to
day, bowing to Kfttherlne stammers,
third ranking British Mar, fl-o, 6-4.
in the semi-final round of the Kent
championships.
Facing the sternest test of a cam
paign that had brought her els; lit
successive victories in England. Mrs.
Moody found herself overmatched by
Mies Stammer, left-handed holder of
the British hard court champion
ship. ;
Miss Stammers used her backhand
to make openings for winning drives
and was helped no little by the fnct
that the Callfornian lacked her usual
accuracy. Mrs. Moody overdrove the
baseline by yards on several occas
ions. Up until today. Mrs. Moody had
dropped only one set since her ar
rival in England and apparently was
playing as well as ever. But she sim
ply could not get started against Miss
Stammers and the British girl ran
through the match with amazing
ease.
