PILOT DESCENDS
AI
ROSEBUHG. Ore.. June 14 (AP)
Flying off hU course and with hit
fuel supply running low. P. H. Barnes
of Escalon. California, set his sport
monoplane down yesterday on the
pasture at Big Camaa ranger station
In the heart of the Umpqua national
forest. It was the first airplane land
ing ever made In the rugged north
Umpqua basin.
Barnes, flying from Grant Pass to
Roseburg. mistook his directions at
Canyonvllle. flying up the South
Umpqua river Instead of following
down the stream Into Roseburg.
The mistake took him Into the
heart of the forest, where he was
forced to seek a landing.
He circled the pasture at the ranger
station, the only cleared spot In the
area, and made a safe landing. The
right landing wheel, however, was
damaged as it struck an ant hill
while the plane was being taxied.
Barnes was taken to Diamond lake
by the Big Camas rangers and plan
ned to go to Medford today to secure
repairs for hla ship. He will attempt
a take-off after repairs are made, he
told forest service officers.
JUDGE AND JURY WEAR
GOGGLES DURING TRIAL
KANSAS CrrT. Mo. (UP) The
dust storms this sprtng reached as
far east as Kansas City a time or
two. but apparently the city folk on
ly got a taste of what became "usual
weather" In the western part of Kan
sas. Merle A. Gill, ballstlclan. called
to Tribune, Kan., to testify in a mur
der case, told about his experiences
"The dust got so thick in the
courtroom that the Judge and Jurors
wore goggles." he said. "They could
hardly make out the pictures of the
bullets I showed. One man aat In the
court room three days before he dis
covered one of the jurors was his
brother. They had to keep the de
fendant handcuffed to the sheriff, or
he could have walked off in the
gloom."
