Golden Wedding on Saturday
Mr. ud Mrs. O. D. Newman of Rou
Lane, who have made their home In
out hern Oregon lor the paat nine
years and have a noet of friends In
thla city and vicinity, will celebrate
their golden wedding anniversary to
morrow. The celebration will Include a pic
nlc at Llthla park In Ashland, ac
cording to plans, with Mr. and Mrs.
Newman's two children who are liv
ing In Medford and their families
present. They are H. W. Wilson of
A28 South Ivy street and Leo Newman
of 214 West Jackson.
The goldenweda have seven other
children, all living, who will prob
ably be unable to attend the anni
versary observance, although their
beat wishes by mall will be added to
the many congratulations being re
ceived at the Newman home from
friends in the valley.
The other children arc Walter of
Wenatchee. Wash.; Dale and Henry of
HessvUle. Ind.; Arthur and Raymond
of Mltchel, 8. D.: Bert of Fremont.
Neb., and Mrs. Fa ye Thompson of
Chicago.
Mr. and Mrs. Newman, who have a
small, attractive farm on Ross lane,
a quarter of a mile from the high
way, came to southern Oregon from
Wisconsin, where they both were
reared, and where they were married.
Nelson -Cam Wedding
Event at Rorkdell park
John N. Nelson and Sylvia Case,
both of Soma Valley, were married
Monday afternoon by Rev. D. E. Mil
lard, at the minister's home at Rock
dll park, on Rogue river near Shady
Cove. They were accompanied by the
bride's mother, Mxa. Beanie Case, and
the bridegroom's brother, Frank L.
Nelson.
Mr. and Mrs. Nelson, both well
known young people of Bams Valley,
will make their home on a farm in
that locality.

Prominent Speakers Will
Attend League Western Writers
A message received In Medford to
day from the president, L. D. Ma
hone of Portland, aaya that the con
vention of the League of Western
Writers, which will be held In the
city the first week In August, will
be the most lntereatlng convention
of the league's activities.
Some of the prominent speakers
will be Dr. D. N. Lehmer of Univer
sity of California, who will speak on
the subject of "Free Ballade." Dr.
Lehmer's wife will accompany him
and will appear on the program, with
'Ten Commandments for Verse Writ
ers" as her subject.
Dr. L. E. Nelson of University of
Redland will speak on "Feature Ar
ticles." and will discuss some of the
problems of amateur writers.

Mrs. J. D. Rlckert of Valley View
drive entertained the memorial staff
of Olive Febekah lodge, honoring Mrs.
Carey McDannels. captain of the staff,
st a 7 o'clock dinner at her home,
Wednesday evening. There were 15
guests, including as out of town
guests, Mrs. Mnry Hull and Mrs. June

John Norrla of Jacksonville.

From Vacation In South
Mr. and Mrs. Sam Colton returned
this week from a pleasant motor trip
to eouthprn California, visiting the
exposition at Ban Diego and aIo
upending a few days at Agua Callente.
They report visiting many other in
teresting places In the south during
the two weeks' vacation.
In Ban Francisco they met Mr, and
Mrs. Ted Leon n rd. who are on a wed
ding trip in California after their re
cent marriage In this city.

Ernest W. Peterson of the Oregon
Journal staff will speak at the First
Methodist Episcopal church Sunday
evening at 8 o'clock.
Mr. Peterson la one of the leading
laymen of that denomination, having
represented the annual conference In
two aesaions of the general confer
ence and having been assigned to
several very Important committees.
He Is very well versed on all the
Important Interest of the church
and. In view of the fact that the an
nual conference meets In less than
two weeks, his message will bo re
ceived with great Interest on the part
of the local congregation.

A special election, to vote on the
question of whether stock shall be
allowed to run at large will be held
Tuesday, June 18, for the Willow
Springs precinct. The polling place
will be tho Willow Springs school
house. There are 153 registered vot
ers In the product, according' to the
county clerk's office. ,

Stock at largo is an Issue In the
Wllow Springs district. District At
torney George, A. Codding said that
tho election was called to clear the
legal atmosphere, following the ac
quittal by a Justice court Jury of
Dave Wilson of Unit iwction, on a
charge of permit time stock to run at
large. The Jury held the district had
been abollahed by a stock election
held four years ago. The state held
the election had no effect on stock
district already formed.

She was arretted at Newhall, Cal.,
on a stolen automobile charge, but
said this accusation was "silly."
"I gave the policeman my plnx
slip when ha arrested me."
With a shrug, she passed off que
tlons abput the kidnaping.
"All I know Is what I read In the
papers." she said, adding : "I knew
I would be considered a good sus
pect." Mifis Shaw, also known as Peggy
Radford, according to police, re
portedly Is a member of a prominent
Tacoma family. She said she worked
In a sanitarium until three weeks

back rides. She came to Hollywood

Miss Shaw was accompanied by
Jack Woods. Olendale, Calif., oil
salesman, when arrested. She said
she had driven out In the country
with Woods to dine. Woods was ques

She told reporters a motorcycle
officer who had stopped her car
said, "Well. I guess thla la It, all
right." and ordered them to get out.
Asked what the policeman meant, he
replied: "This car la on the sheet."
Capt. Norris O. Stensland. chief
of county investigators, questioned
Miss Shaw, and later said he "saw
no reason to disbelieve her story
that she knew nothing about the
Weyerhaeuser case."
MIm Shaw waived extradition pro
ceedings. Stensland notified Police
Chief H. P. Bird of Washington City,
Wash., thnt Miss Shaw wan being
held for Washington authorities.

RALLY SATURDAY
Plan hare been completed for
the holding by the Salvation Army
of their fifth annual southern Ore
gon young people's congresa In this
city Saturday and Sunday, June Ifl
16. According to Captain Durham, of
thla, city, approximately eighty dele
gates will be registered for the con
gress this year. Klamath Falls, Rose
burg, Grants Pass. Marshfield and
Medford are Included In the south
ern Oregon district and young peo
ple from these five cities will attend
the congress.
The first of the series of meetings
which have been arrange! will take
place at 3:80 p.m., Saturday and
will be In the nature of a welcome
demonstration for the Incoming dele,
gate. Registrations will . be taken
and accommodations assigned. All
local delegates are asked to attend
the meeting at the Army hall, 411
East Main street.
At 7:30 p.m., a united open air
meeting will be held at Main and
Central streets, preceded by a march
from the Army hall. This meeting
will be followed by a demonstration
In the county court house audito
rium at 8 :00 p. m. The delegation
from each city will contribute to
this program. No admission will be
