ENGRAVER PLIES
TRADE AS GUNS
BLAST AT SHOOT
A man who sits calmly at a little
table In front of the Medford Gun
club has turned out to be one of the
main attractions for spectators at
tending the state trnpshoot. There is
always an awed group about him and
he doesn't mind the attention he
receives In the least. Not only does
he work as you lean over his shoulder;
he will even carry on a conversation
as he tolls at his art.
The man is W. A. Crum and he Is
an engraver by profession. He la here
to engrave In steel the names and
addresses of owners upon their guns.
It is a novel occupation. It Is said,
and only a rare few follow It.
Mr. Crum haa been following all
the major traps hoots In this country,
Canada and Mexico since 1028. He
does the engraving free hand and in
ten minutes he can cut a name and
address into the hard steel of t gun.
Ho motors from one meet to the next
with his family and while he Is out
on the coast he Is planning to visit
his brother, C, D. Crum, who resides
In Portland.
Mr. Crum has engraved the name
of many shotgun celebrities upon
their favorite weapons. Including Ted
iRenfro, the internationally famous
scatter-gunner, who Is participating
In the Medford tournament; Frank
jThoeh, Oregon state singles cham
pion, also here; Mark Arte, Joe Hies
jtand, Gus Payne and Sam Sharman.
He haa also engraved the guns of
j Governor Morley Grlswold of Nevada
I and Governor Vic Donahey of Ohio.
Mr. Crum's home state, his residence
I being In Columbus. Last year at the
Reno meet he engraved Mayor Geo.
W. Porter's gun and today he cut the
name of Med ford's chief executive
I upon another weapon.
Although 'Mr. Crum estimates he
I haa engraved more than 10.000 guns',
i he had never owned any kind of a
I firearm himself until last year when
: Police Chief W. L. Payne of Salt Lake
city presented him with a pistol.
I The pistol, now engraved with fancy
; scrolls as an example of his own art,
may be seen on Mr. Crum's work
table.

When Mae West says "C'mup and
see me sometime." there are seven
men who can take the invitation as
meaning themselves personally, ac
cording to the blonde atare confession-
and John D. Rockefeller heads
the list.
Currently starring In "Ooln to
Town," coming Sunday to the Ora-
terlan theater, the picture In which
she goes modem, Mae West admits
that there are a number of men she
would really like to meet.
I wanna meet John D. says Mae
West, "to find out where he gets all
those dimes he's always giving away.
'If I ever meet 'Dizzy' Dean, maybe
I can find out of he'a as good as he
says he Is.
"The Prince of Wales has been
looking for the right girl for 40 years
now, and hasn t had much luck. May
be I could Interest him.
"As for Mustapha Kemal, there's a
man I want to shake by the hand and
thank. When he took the Turkish
women out of the harems and out
from behind their veils, he did a real
service. I'll bet he's glad he did It.'
Melville H. Purvis, the department
ot Justice agent who tracked down
Dl lunger. Is "fascinating" for Mae
West, too.
Mae West would like to meet Cabell
to find out If "his books really mean
what I think they do.".
Aa for Dionne papa of the famed
quintuplets Mae West says "What
woman wouldn't want to meet a man
like that?"
"Goln' to Town" shows Mae as the
broncho-busting cowgirl who pursues
a handsome Englishman all over the
world, and eventually lands him In
Southampton, stronghold of society,
where she goes the social reglsterltes
one better to "get her man.
