OT0RIES about peasant in pre
em China, devouring grass in the fields to stay their hunger
cause shudders to shake the frames of stout trenchermen. Yet
in addressing the biological chemistry division of the American
Chemical society at its recent annual meeting 0. F. Schnabel o
Kansas City urged grass as a substitute for srinach and carrots
in the diet af families who cannot afford green vegetables dur
ing a large part of the year. One pound of grass flour, he
reported, contains more vitamin and greens value than fifty
pounds of fresh head lettuce. The discovery was made acci
dentally in a search for a diet which would increase egg produc
tion in hens and also bring about lower poultry mortality.
Mr. Schnabel found that young
many common vegetables in food value by from 200 to 500 per
cent. The dried grass is said to smell and taste like malted milk.
In the Applegate section of
was launched three years ago to raise grass on thousands of
acres of former forest and range lands devastated by fire.
C. C. Hoover of Medford, directing the project under the aus
pices of Applegate Grange chose the seed of a winter blue grass
related to the famous Kentucky
recommended by agronomist as peculiarly well adapted to this
type of planting. It reverses the usual process of nature by
commencing growth with the first fall rains, growing freely
throughout the winter, maturing a seed crop in April or May,
and becoming dormant over the summer period.
Interesting results have been
planting Kikuyu grass at Cedara,
maintains an experimental farm. It was thus found possible to
obtain 1,200 gallons of milk to the acre, or about four times the
yield on unimproved veldt. Experiments with woolly finger
grass, which has high food value, have proved equally successful.
Indications are that when this
the carrying capacity of veldt

utterances in your paper certainly do
not live up to the fair play your
paper haa the reputation of possess
ing. It Is true we gave the city of
Medford the sum of 8flOo for showing
In your city. We also gave you close
to 8100 for advertising and printing
material. We paid to your hotels.
restaurants, merchants, etc., close to
the sum of 8000. We can prove these
ststementa aa we keep a tab of blue
slip which are given to each mere-riant
for purchases made In each
city.
We never had one Interference by
your local police while we were
showing In your city. We never had
one utterance of disapproval while
showing your city why this be
lated cry of crookedness and graft
at thia late date? The time should
have been while we were in opera
tion and not after we have depart
ed from your city and unable to de
fend ourselves from these unjust
attack.
Aa to taking all the money out
of town we spent more money In
the city of Medford than we took
away with us. Our books are open
to Inspection and due to adverse
weather conditions our showing In
the city of Medford waa anything
but profitable to this organisation.
It waa true there waa supposed to
be a loat dog that some of the show
people waa supposed to have pur
chased you will get the word pur
chased and the owners were not
on the trail trying to discover the
animal's whereabouts. After a thor
ough search of the entire show we
were unable to locate any dog ac
cording to the description given by
the owner, consequently this reac
tion haa been taken by these peo
ple. There are Just about four million
people In the amusement business
at the present writing and these
four million people have never been
on the dole, or accepted charity dur
ing the recent depression. We at
least earn our own living which 1
more than you can say for people
In other walks of life.
Your mayor, your city council,
your chief of police, your police force
waa on the midway nightly and we
feel certain that they are Intelli
gent enough to Judge the caliber of
games and shows that were exhibited
for the approval of the people of the
city of Medford. They treated us
with all the fairness, aa one gentle
man to another and If anything
had been amiss as you Infer In your
srttcle. they certainly would hav
closed the entire show. We believe
that you can rely upon the good
Judgment of your public officials
when It comes to attending to the
morals of your community.
We have traveled from the city or
Loa Angeles to the city of Medford
snd this is the first time we have
been attacked without reason or Jus
tice and we certainly resent the
article you have so kindly printed in
your recent edition. What Is more
to the point we went out of our way

both of these, her children, with
contempt. It Is difficult to tell
which Is the most despised: the lat
ter seem to receive vengeance with
greater dispatch.
In the kidnaping of their little

of great value; we hope that they
have Intelligence enough to grasp It.

The history of medicine In this
country in the past twenty years Is a
revue (of all medical history. As I
have advocated the chemical oblite
ration of varicose veins, the dia
thermy extirpation of tonsils, the
ambulant treatment of hernia and
the injection treatment of hemor
rhoids. In that order, the big bozos
of the profession have first pooh
poohed, then condemned and finally
adopted the new methods, but they
keep on sneering and snarling at me
every chance they get.
Formerly I enjoyed the cordial co
operation of the national ..medical
organization, and endeavored to re
ciprocate In various ways. Then sud
denly an executive of the organiza
tion began to syndicate hla articles
to the dally newspapers, and with
his other hand shut off every service
or help the organization had been
rendering to me. And that same
executive, sitting like a vigilant
spider in hla web. watches, watches,
until he finds my guard down and
then he rushes to his organ, or one
of them, and publishes the most
poisonous distortions of the truth he
can contrive to damn me with his
readers.
AH that doesn't quite annihilate
me, because every once In a while
I get a good word from the man
behind the gun, as for instance:

a slight scratch, it doesn't heal, be

peroxide to draw out the pus until

Answer Generally contamination
of the slight wound or abrasion, by
contact with unclean clothing, fin
gers or salves, accounts for delayed
healing and Infection. Paint or touch
every fresh abrasion, scratch or
puncture with common tincture of
lodln, once only, then Immediately
seal it against contamination with
either flexible collodion, clean adhe
sive plaster, or a sterile (baked) pad
of gauze and bandage. To prevent
sticking of dressing to wound, squeeze
from collapsible tube a wee bit ol
sterile petrolatum or simple salve
upon the surface. Having given this
first aid. do not disturb the dressing
again. Peroxide la all right to clean
up a foul wound or raw aurfaoe, but
should not be applied repeatedly. It
Is possible that your son has some
Inherent blood deficiency, but that
la for your physician to determine.
