MAY PROVE SOLUTION
FOR ORCHARD PESTS
WENATCHEB, Wash. (UP)
Electric short wave rays may prove
solution to pest control In Northwest
apple orchards. If the Invention of V,
E. Worden of Seattle It developed on
a large scale.
The coddling moth, which lays egga
that develop Into apple worms, is the
greatest problem of the Industry.
Control requires numerous and ex
pensive sprayings, leaving residue
declared dangerous by some health
authorities, harmless by others.
Worden demonstrated a model of
his device at Wenatche'e, center of
one of the Northwest's greatest fruit
sections. A black box buzzed mys
teriously, and worms In a glass tumb
ler between two squares of what look
ed like tinfoil curled up and died.
The glass remained cold.
"With this apparatus built on &
large scale and carried on trucks, 2
can kill every animate object In your
orchards, coddling moths, aphis,
worms, field mice, gophers and
snakes, and It won't hurt the trees
a particle," Worden told orchardlsts.
He estimated equipment large enough
for orchard use would cost 3,500.
