The cat. ordinarily considered quite
a hund with rats and even gophers,
was poking around the basement
when a rat lungrd out, clamped Its
teeth Into the cut s Jaw and held on
until driven away by Mrs. Drake.

ment scientists are on the trail of a
mysterious disease which has plagued
Rocky Mountain area sheep herds for
more than half a century.

Clawson's headquarters will be at
SnUna, Utah, but he and his assist
ants expect to study representative
sections of the northern Rockies'
livestock ranges.
The scientists hope to establish
further, definite proof that the sheep
disease, "blghcad." Is caused by 'co;il
oil weed." or "fiprneless horscbrush."
They began a definite study of the
disease a year ago.
For at least 80 years "bighrad''
has brought heavy losses to Western
sheepmen, many of whom have ac
cepted It Is something which could
not bo avoided.
The most serious outbreaks occur
in fairly' definite places along the
trails, or on the bed grounds while
sheep are being moved from winter
ranges to lambing grounds.
It was found that either "coal oil
wet'd." or "spineless horsebrush. Is1
abundant In every area where" big-1
head" Is dangerous, but they are i
found only In small Isolated patches1
on other ranges. The period when the
plnnts are poisonous coincides with
the season when "bihrad" occur.
The conclusion Is that these plants
may be the cause.

The many friends of the Dlxons of
Fort Klamath, in Eagle Point and
vicinity, will be sorry to learn of the
misfortune of Mrs. Seth Dixon in
having one of her lower limbs broken
In three places. Particulars as to how
the accident occurred have not been
learned here. It wlll.be recalled by
some that Seth Dixon is the owner
of the herd of 2.000 steers which was
driven from the Cold Springs ranch
on the upper Crooked river to the
feeding grounds In Fort Klamath, the
first of March of this year and Mrs. i
Dixon rode and helped with part of j
the drive; other days keeping in
touch with the herd by automobile. I

active, militant, 71-year-old reformer
who believes In using constitutional
methods to meet weaknesses of an

sponsible attacks" heads the Presby
terian church in the U. S. A. today.

Vance, pastor of the First Presbyte
rian church of Detroit, elected mod
erator by the church assembly yester

I himself today as he discussed church
i troubles and his personal philosophy

"I am a constitutional presbyter."
(he said vigorously. 'I believe In us
ilng constitutional methods instead of
irresponsible attacks In meeting
weaknesses in the church structure.
And I shall so dea! with the doctrinal
disturbances in the church today."
Born in Sullivan county, Tennessee,
In 1864. the son of a Confederate sol
dier. Dr. Vance has kept In tune
with modern economic and social de
velopments. "I am Intensely Interested In pres
ent economic movements." he said.
"I believe In abolition of child la
bor, in old age pensions. In some
form of unemployment Insurance."
Speaking of religious tenenta, Dr.
Vance characterized himself as "a
firm believer In Christianity" whose
preaching has "centered around
Christ and His atoning sacrifice for
