of Kansas despite the Roosevelt
landslide. Two years later, seeking
re-election, he weathered the new
deal landslide with ease, and it was
then that he began to attract nat
ional attention.
Governor Landon, though only
43, has earned a comfortable fortune
an an Independent oil man and la
ready to give politics an ample share
of his time In the future.
No (iiultmi for Wealth
"I am no glutton for weatth," he
once replied to the charge that he
was an oil millionaire. "That Is one
reason that I have been turning
away from business and into poll
tics."
Landon has had his ups and
downs In business, but he has been
uniformly successful. Many call him
lucky, and cite as an Instance the
week In 1032 when he won the Re
publican nomination, became the
father of a son and had a 800 barrel
oil well come In. Landon demurs to
the lucky appellation.
"If thinking things out and then
executing them constitutes luck
then perhups I am lucky," he smiles.

That smile, slow and Infectious,
and his battered felt hat were great
assets when Landon stumped the
Btnte the first time. They probably
explain why he Is known as Alf and
not Alfred, even when the name la
algned to official documents.
Landon's home la at Indoprndenre.
He has lived there since hia parents
moved to Kansas from Pennsylvania
In 1904. His first wife died In 1918
and In 1930 he married Miss Theo
Cobb, daughter of a Topeka banker.
A daughter, Teppy Ann, 18, Is a stu
dent at Kansas university. Two chil
dren of the second marriage, Nancy
Jo and John Cobb Landon, were
born In 1D32 and 1033.
A similar Jaunt to Ashland will
be made next Wednesday, the band
also going along.
On both the visits an invitation
will be extended to the two lodgea to
come to Medford on May 31 and at
tend the reception and banquet given
for the Elks Nattlonal Oood-WUl am
bassadors. Exalted Ruler Butler announced at
last night's mettlnp that there waa
about half a day's work to be done
on the picnic ground road and called
for volunteers to go out Sunday
morning and help with thla Job. A
picnic lunch will be provided by the
lodge.
The lodge initiated into the Order
laat night C. J. Chord. C. V. Klein
hammer, and W. H. Caty. Next class
will be initiated June 27.

bass frm the dock there Wednes
day afternoon. The fish was shipped
to E. H. Lamport in Medford, to be
placed on exhibition. Some unusually
fine catches of bass have been made
In Biltcoos lake this season. Fine
weather has prevailed of late.
