The burning of the state capltol,
whou the famous copper dome nod
ded Its head In a final farewell, to
the pioueors of the state, was a beau
tiful slaht. The flames yellow,
green and blue melded- In perfect
harmony, lit up the eky for miles
around Just before the ancient land
mark for thousands of people hid tts
head In the grasping arms of the
demon of fire.
The building that, burned during
the nlht was 60 years of ef;e. The
llrst unit was authorized by the leg
l.sluturc of 1872 (at that time held hi
September of the even-numbered
years) but was not completed until
1875. The copper dome was complet
ed 18 years later.
Among the losses charged against
posterity were the oil paintings of
the former governors of the state and
territory. These were hung in the
house and senate chambers, and the
governor wa about to make some
changes. The painting of Julius L.
Meier, the most recent governor, had
not yet been completed. Hla will
probably be the first to appear In the ,
new capltol building If and when.
The governor's office was the Inst
on the second floor to catch fire, but
It also made the brightest blaze. :
Those who contended this may have :
been due to the hue of the gover
nor's secretary's hair had not been
apprized the red-headed young man
hnd accompanied the governor on
his trip south.
